Does anyone else think the real life homeowners might have overreacted a bit ?

When I read into the real story I honestly thought ... That's it ? 3 very weird and creepy letters yes but would that be enough to give up your dream home you just bought by the skin of your teeth ?

I think id have just moved in and got on with my life 🤨

I'm struggling to.understand why a series was made out of such a dull-as-dishwater non-story. Wasted hours watching this drivel waiting for something... anything... to fucking happen.

Massive yawn

MulberryMoon · 23/10/2022 20:20

It was one of those series I thought would be better if they'd condensed it into 3 episodes, rather than the endless "it was her/it was him/no it wasn't/yes it was/no it was her" blah blah

owo · 23/10/2022 20:22

After reading the first letter, I'd have put any more straight in the bin and got on with my life.

However in the show there were other creepy goings on, like people randomly turning up at their house and their pet being killed. So I don't think they overreacted.

Thought the series was a bit crap though, they obviously strayed quiet far from the original events to make it more interesting but just made it into the a dullish haunted house tale.

Nospringchickendipper · 23/10/2022 20:23

I couldn’t understand an article I read saying that some people where afraid to stay on their own homes alone after watching it.
What we’re they actually afraid of.

mayaknew · 23/10/2022 20:25

Tbh I did like the show but the fictional stuff made it into a show!!

The real story is a joke! How that is even newsworthy I don't know. I suppose it's a bit weird and unusual but I cannot imagine it making me give up my house.

What about the ferret murder!? What about ‘John’ and the tunnels? It wasn’t just the letters.

I'm talking about the "true story" the show was based off. It was literally just 3 letters. The rest is fictional.

I’ve just finished it. Very disappointed it was inconclusive.

Yeah the true life story is bonkers. But I guess the fascinating thing is how the far the owners went to try and find out who "the watcher" was, and that they were even prepared to give up the house.

I think a drama on the true events, perhaps concentrating on the crazy, obsessive behaviour of the owners, kind of like a descent into madness type thing would have being more interesting than the whole spooky house tropes.

uhtredbebbanburg · 23/10/2022 20:38

I agree that the actual story was pretty mundane and they had to flesh it out quite a lot for the programme. The letters were pretty creepy, though the watcher could have got the kids’ names and nicknames from just being observant. What I got from the programme in the end was interested in the John List story which was much more noteworthy and weird.

mayaknew · 23/10/2022 23:01

Although Theodora is fictional they apparently did hire PIs and put a lot of effort into finding out who was sending them. I just don't think I'd care that much

I completely agree! I did the same as you and researched googled the real story, and couldn't believe it. A couple of creepy letters, and they hadn't even moved into the house! It was still while renovations were being done and they hadn't even moved in. How ridiculous!

Waspo · 23/10/2022 23:10

I really enjoyed the series but I am baffled by the original "story"! Three letters in 5 years? And that's it? All the added stuff in the series made it all super creepy but none of that actually happened in the real life version.. it's so weird that they kept the name of the house address in it as if it was a big dramatic story when it was really something of nothing! Bin the letters and live your life.

The series was good though, I liked it.

LidlCinnamonBun · 23/10/2022 23:21

I would have got a big scary dog instead of a tiny ferret that was so dumb it got it’s face smushed so easily.
I would have just put the letters in recycling and forgotten about them rather than wearing white clothes and whinging and sobbing all over the place and occasionally making a boring and hideously overpriced vase

Handswhereicanseethem · 23/10/2022 23:39

I would’ve locked the front door and closed the curtains. I turned it off after about 20 minutes, I can’t believe how many episodes it is and how popular it is 🥱
