I have young female relatives at Cardiff University, and I am so worried after reading this article.

Newspaper article here

I am worried sick on two levels:

  1. the presence of this man in a role where students have been actively told him contact him if they have any worries or struggles.

  2. the leadership at the university which has allowed this to happen. The article states that this man’s very recent and serious convictions were disclosed at the time of application, so he has been knowingly placed in this role. What kind of an organisation would allow that?

Wish they would let you have 1 thread about this, instead of people posting multiple threads.

Mumsnet keep deleting threads about this. You absolutely should be worried about your female relatives at the Uni because this shows a shocking lack of judgement, leadership and shines a light on the way the Uni views young women in particular.

My daughter has applied to Cardiff for 2023. I shall be very carefully watching how they deal with this.

This is shocking and again minimises the risks of strangulation resulting in death.

Mine is at the uni. She couldn't believe it.
What the hell.

There’s multiple threads because Mn keep deleting them.

For identifying the man. Despite that Information already being in the public eye

That's why I said they should let you keep 1 post.

This has only been reported on Wales Online so far, I think. Daily Mail are highly likely to pick it up imminently and it would be even more absurd for MNHQ to delete threads about it at that point.

MrJi · 23/10/2022 19:28

The information is all there on Walesonline. It is on many other sites, so in the public domain.
I have seen it written that the checks are not required to be rigorous because the students are legal adults, yet my child was offered a place in Cardiff, and so could have started there this Autumn, and is under 18. She could be there now, under 18 and living in the same halls as this violent offender.
It is horrifying.

He has obviously got a job as a hall tutor, I used to be a University housing officer. It means he could possibly be the only person on call depending on how they do their rotas for emergency situations. I am unsure if hall tutors have to declare any criminal record, it’s an odd one because they are not always paid a wage but receive free accommodation and all bills paid. But I was a housing officer at a different University so have no idea what their recruitment is like. Needs to be removed form that role though I suppose being a convicted criminal does not stop you being a student, but cannot remain in this position.

CornishTiger · 23/10/2022 19:43

Rachel Williams founder of sutda.org/ has picked up on it on her Facebook.

Two female friends of my son (17) are keen on Cardiff for Medicine and another wants to do languages there. It’s supposed to be a very good uni in a nice city so it’s a popular choice. This is worrying. He needs to go asap.
