I’ve had a very cathartic Facebook purge

For no specific reason, other than why not? Do I really need to see photos from people I was at school with but haven’t seen since?

watch a sanitised version of a lifestyle for people I wouldn’t cross the road to catch up with?

I’ve unfriended 70 this afternoon, and tightened my Facebook settings, and don’t regret a moment!

Well done! See if anyone notices and sends you a new friend request :)

TicketToRideFan · 23/10/2022 16:51

Yes! I doubt it, to be honest, these people are ones I know slightly social or have low level connections with - probably we’d all be equally happy just saying hi if we bump into each other in Tesco instead.

I've never understood why people make such a big deal of this.

I've never understood why people make such a big deal of this.

It’s hardly a big deal to announce on an anonymous forum, so large a forum that statistically few people will see or engage with the post - no big drama here, just a musing over why I didn’t do this before and wondering if others shared my recent view.

I'm surprised you see enough posts to decide who you want to see or not. When I go onto FB it's all ads or group activity, I don't know if my 'friends' rarely post or if the algorithm means I never see them, but it makes visiting the platform pointless.

Im early 40's, if that means anything.

I deleted mine altogether after a similar purge and I've never looked back. I honestly think my mental health us better for it.

I could be tempted, but it is useful for a couple of hobby groups and for people I genuinely like who live overseas - it’s nice seeing little snapshots of their lives.

If you see lots of ads it might be worth deleting them and , eventually, they stop popping up. Only to be replaced by others, I know.

girlmom21 · 23/10/2022 17:21

I deleted a girl from school who I hadn't spoken to in 10 years and whose boyfriend was a dick and always started arguments with random strangers on her posts.

She tried re-adding me 4 times (every time I declined her request). In the and I messaged her asking why she wanted to be my Facebook friend as we're not friends and she said "well you're friends on here with other people from school".
My best friend and DP's step-grandads granddaughter, my old next door neighbour, and someone I still saw through work. That's it. I had to explain that to her - 10 years later - for her to take the hint!

TicketToRideFan · 23/10/2022 17:35

And that’s another 15 gone - this is great

Did you make one of those wanky announcements first?

Did you make one of those wanky announcements first?

Or after... "congratulations if you're still here"

RoachTheHorse · 23/10/2022 17:47

I just binned Facebook altogether. Now THAT was cathartic. I really recommend it!

TicketToRideFan · 23/10/2022 17:49

Nope, no wanky announcement other than this!

nothing posted to FB.

and perhaps down the line FB itself will go.

How many FB friends did you have to start with? I know some people have thousands while others have a few.

I've got about 150, including a couple of people who have died. I really need to trim some friends but always feel guilty at the thought of deleting them.

Moominfanjo · 23/10/2022 19:42

Much more cathartic to delete fb altogether in my experience!

I was sitting at about 190 and now have 99

I’ve recently temporarily deleted it but pro won’t go back.
It was going my head in. I’ve encouraged my chap to do the same but not sure he has.
I feel so much better without it.
It’s changed so much and the algorithms mean I don’t see friends’ posts the same way anymore, just wretched adverts. It’s a waste of life looking at it.

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 23/10/2022 20:18

Sorry but that's a bit pathetic. Just come off it altogether. Who needs Facebook
