Taylor Swift - Midnights

I've looked and looked and can't see a thread on this ...

Is anyone else completely in awe of Taylor's new album? I've been listening on repeat since Friday!

Favourites so far:
Vigilante Shit

Anti-Hero

Karma

Bejewelled

Lavender Haze

Midnight Rain

Would've, could've, should've

I think she has done an amazing job on this album. I genuinely think it's a masterpiece. She just keeps getting better and better. The only songs I'm not that keen on are Maroon and Snow on the Beach.

I LOVE Maroon!! I also like Lavender Haze and Anti-hero & Karma. Still working through the ‘extra’ tracks to work out my favourites.
Nothing will ever top 1989 & Reputation for me though. I like the big, overproduced sound of those too more than the pared-back Taylor of late, but still love her full stop.

RNBrie · 23/10/2022 14:00

Listened to it the first time the other night and thought it was excellent. Vigilante Shit is a great song and I loved Bejewelled.

But I'm hacked off with the unnecessary swearing - most of the songs have an Explicit badge. Means I can't listen to it when my kids are around which is most of the time.

ThisIsWhyWeCantHaveNiceThings · 23/10/2022 14:02

Yeah, she has been swearing loads. There is a 'clean' version of the album on Apple Music, not sure about other streaming platforms though.

I bought it for my 8 year old's birthday. Hadn't actually listened to it but she loves Taylor Swift and I thought most of her stuff was age appropriate. Whoops!!

Reputation is my favourite album, I think. But I do enjoy this version of Taylor, I was hoping this album would be folky like folklore/evermore. Think the more I listen to it, the more I like it.

I like Paris too. Also agree too much unnecessary swearing.

Rockbird · 23/10/2022 14:06

Not personally but my 14yo has had it on repeat since it launched. She's particularly loving Karma and Lavender Haze!

TinaYouFatLard · 23/10/2022 14:08

14 year old DD also listening on repeat. She’s loving all the memes about Lana Del Ray.

Buckland123 · 23/10/2022 14:09

Yes Reputation is underrated imo. I love every song on it except Look What You Made Me Do. I love the massive sound of Ready for It, Don’t Blame Me etc - such strong, angry tunes - love them!
I liked a few tracks on Lover too but a lot of b-sidey stuff filling the middle. Evermore & Folklore are ok but not my thing generally, except for Illicit Affairs & Tis the Damn Season which I listen to endlessly as they’re works of art!

Haven't seen any Lana del ray memes? To be honest, I don't really know much about her so wasn't all that excited!

I quite like Look What You Made Me Do. It's a good song to listen to when someone has pissed me off 😆

I Did Something Bad is sooo good. And I agree, I love her anger in it, I think there is a bit of that in Midnights to be honest.

I rate Taylor so highly as writer, singer, performer, an artist on every front involved in being and selling Taylor Swift - Red TS, Folklore, Evermore, 1989 are all incredible - I'm currently struggling to warm to Midnights - sometimes that's a good sign - albums that win you over too quickly can sometimes soon loose their magic - I hope I will eventually be won over but ATM - I'm just not feeling it. I think it's because she is such an amazing vocalist she can literally run a melody through a line of anything - so I wonder if she is really taking as much care as she used to in crafting the lyrics - it's as if she doesn't have to pay as much attention to the way a line scans because she can sing one line with 6 words in it and the next line with 16 words in it and still do it without tripping over the words, messing up the timing or not managing a melody of sorts - in some cases I think the lines are too long and I can't always hear every word.

Pray for me Swifties ;-)

MOB247 · 23/10/2022 14:24

I'm really enjoying listening to this at the moment.

My favs are Lavender Haze, midnight rain, vigilante shit, karma, sweet nothing, the Great War. Bigger then the whole sky ( I love this but it's so sad I have only listened to it once).

My favourite albums are evermore and rep so am pleased we got the 3am tracks as well which are a bit more evermoreish.

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 23/10/2022 14:32

I don't think this is going to end up being my favourite album of hers but I do really like it.
I often find with her albums that the songs I don't immediately love end up being my favourites, but so far I like lavender haze, karma, anti-hero, question, you're on your own kid, mastermind, bejewelled, and bigger than the whole sky.

Illicit Affairs is such an underrated song, one of my absolute favourites. I love Folklore in general though.

I’m really enjoying Midnights, Vigilante Shit and Anti Hero are my favourites so far.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 23/10/2022 14:39

I heard, 'anti hero' the radio and frankly I thought, 'meh.'

Can't be bothered with the album because of that.

I am a middle aged Taytay fan !

I heard her describing how she wrote, 'anti - hero' even she was giggling because she didn't believe it either.

clockbuscanada · 23/10/2022 15:01

I like Anti-hero and Paris best so far.

Reputation is a masterpiece. I loved folklore and evermore during lockdown, when me and my longtime ex reconnected it all felt very zeitgeisty.

Style, Wildest Dreams and Blank Space are my favourite 'old Taylor' songs, and I have a soft spot for 22 and Welcome to New York - even though they are both cheesy as anything and not really in keeping with my middle agedness or usual music taste, I lived in New York when I was 22 so that's my excuse.

woff45 · 23/10/2022 15:05

Reputation is my favourite too, that's got hit after hit. I need to listen to Midnights more, it seems ok but nothing massively stand out for me but I'm wondering if it'll be a grower for me.

BeagleMumma · 23/10/2022 15:08

I'm really not rating it to be honest, it won't be the first I'd reach for, but I didn't really like Reputation either!

I'm just excited for her Taylor's Versions of Speak now and her Debut album - I miss country-pop Taylor!

That said I do bloody love Anti-Hero!

I was like that with Reputation. I'd listened to 1989 and Red on repeat for years, but just wasn't feeling Reputation when it first came out.

Took me four years and lockdown to appreciate it, and now it's probably my favourite. So, have faith in the Swift! When I first listened to midnights I wasn't that into it (aside from vigilante shit which was instantly my fave 😆) but the more I listen the more I just adore it.

I don't know what you mean by this? Are you saying she doesn't feel like she says she does in Anti-Hero?

I haven't listened to it yet, I'm not in the headspace to take in a new album. My foster son is a massive fan and I've grown to like her a lot. What I want to listen to really depends on my mood, but Right Where You Left Me will always be my standout favourite,

Niftythrifter · 23/10/2022 15:54

I listened to it on Friday and wasn’t too impressed however I started to listen to it again today and it’s growing on me.

Namechangedforthis12456 · 23/10/2022 16:16

I’ve started listening to it but I haven’t heard every song yet. I keep getting fixated on certain songs and just listening to that one on repeat.

Favourites so far are Snow on the Beach, Anti Hero, Vigilante Shit and Maroon.

Only one I really haven’t gelled with is Karma. For some reason it sounds too obvious and immature but it may grow on me.
