Do I need antibiotics for white tonsillitis?

111 said it can be viral and prescribed them and said don't take them unless you have a high temperature.

It was 1 tonsil yesterday and this morning it's 2. Don't have a high temperature but do feel rough.

Would you start the antibiotics?

Yes, definitely.

I would. I once used to get tonsillitis pretty much every year (didn’t bother going to GP) but eventually had it very badly, felt really ill with it. First ABs did nothing - GP then put me on different ones for at least 10 days.

That was years ago and I’ve never had it since. Have come to the conclusion that I had been a carrier of the particular bug (it does happen) which flared up now and then - but the ABs finally shifted it.

I have read in a Victorian novel of someone dying from a ‘putrid sore throat’ - after my last dose I understood that absolutely!

Thank you both

Take them or it will get worse.

Yes, definitely. It should start to improve within 2-3 doses.

Is the white coating just on the tonsils or on your tongue also? Might be oral thrush. Do you use inhalers that say to rinse your mouth out after use?

tonsilitis · 23/10/2022 11:16

@MarmiteCoriander it's just tonsils. It's definitly tonsillitis as I have had it many times.

I was surprised they said don't take them, as I thought the white meant a bacterial one.

I have started them, thanks all
