Removing internet restrictions - (how) did you monitor at first?

At the moment DS (Yr6) has allowed websites only on the iPad/laptop. Safari is disabled on his phone.

He has his first piece of homework which requires him to research on the internet. Allowed sites only won't cover it so I guess I'll have to change his settings to "limit adult websites".

How did you monitor internet searches after this stage? Did you even monitor what they search for?
Insist on using laptop in the living room?
Sitting down next to him whilst he searches?
Leaving him to it and checking history afterwards?

Not sure what's OTT and what's reasonable to start with!

I didn’t monitor my kids’ internet use. I tried my best to raise sensible kids and keep communication between us open.

As long as you have some parental controls that aim to stop the adult sites you should be OK.
Some parental controls can also keep a log of sites accessed iirc (DH organises).
Keep laptop in a general living area where you can easily ask what they are on.

Monitoring / random checking internet and social media use of pre/early teens is good parenting.

I never put restrictions on the internet and never monitored usage.
