We are redecorating dds (3 1/2) bedroom. It’s not been done since her nursery and I think she deserves a new room. Problem is she wants it pink. Not even nice pink just straight up BUBBLEGUM BARBIE PINK!!!! The floor is vinyl click and Im not fucking changing it to bright pink thanks for your input dd. So what do I do? I don’t really want to paint the walls pink as last week she LOVED blippi. But this week she HATES it. Toddlers…… help!!!!

Even if you paint a room neutral, it will need repainting at some point, so people who hate painting aren't necessarily able to dodge it indefinitely.

TickTockBaby · 22/10/2022 08:14

Choose two pinks you could live with and leave the choice of which one to her.

TickTockBaby · 22/10/2022 08:16

Is it helps we let our DD decide- in her ild bedroom it was fairy woodland wallpaper, pink walls, pink curtains and pink lightshade.

In this room its purple walls and space wallpaper. I just close the door- its her room 🤷‍♀️

My DD was always allowed to pick out the colours for her room - she had (not all at the same time)- pink, lime green, lilac, yellow, neon green and finally teal - all before she was 14 - she is an adult now and recently bought her first house - as her father was painting her bedroom a very neutral cream I commented what a calm room it was - she looked me straight in the eye and said “yes its a reaction to all the mad colours you painted my room at home” 🙄

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
brilliant!!!

EmilyGilmoresSass · 22/10/2022 08:29

My daughters room is a similar shade of pink. It gets lots of compliments and if that's what she wants I don't see the harm in it. Why offer for her to have input to then ignore it?

Davethecat2000 · 22/10/2022 08:29

Thanks!

One of DD's friends said it looked like 'a unicorn had vomited rainbows everywhere' Grin

I have to say I loved decorating that room! 🌈🌈🌈

Do people really let 3yos dictate decor?

Dictate???

I think you mean choose!

I ask what colour, light/dark etc then provide acceptable colours for them to choose from. Or they choose a theme & I show them things they can choose from & make it a joint project.

by nature I'm pretty controlling/anal/particular/fussy but I like them to choose how they want THEIR rooms. I wouldn't let a 3yo to choose black, but I'd do grey with black accessories that are easy to change. The walls are just paint, so as long as the compute isn't too dark, it's no big deal to paint over.💁🏻‍♀️

hesbeingabitofadick · 22/10/2022 08:37

As a child I had 2 pale pink walls and 2 lemon walls.

They eventually got painted over after I drew a half-scale Ford Rally car on one of them. Grin

I chose purple.

Bestcatmum · 22/10/2022 08:40

My DS went through a camo phase which I loathed. I just let him have it. He soon grew out of it once it was out of his system.

SNWannabe · 22/10/2022 08:41

@Fuckallthetories I’m so glad you’re going to let her go with the pink. Dd is now a grown up, but was talking about her pink room (also age 3) which was a Disney princess pink (literally, I don’t know if it exists anymore but twenty years ago some paint company made Disney pink as pink as you can imagine!). Her pink phase only lasted a few years thankfully, she then wanted to be a dog and then a boy and is now happily a mum and not a princess.

@Davethecat2000 that blanket/quilt- is it handmade? It’s gorgeous and I’d like one for MY bed!!!! ❤️

bcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyza · 22/10/2022 08:41

I got married in a rose pink dress....

I love pink and even as a wee girl always pink stuff and said I would get married in pink mum thought I was joking

Twillow · 22/10/2022 08:42

If you ask a child what colour do you want your room then you ought to honour what they say - it's only paint and can be redone easily, and they will have some great pictures and memories to look back on.

ElectedOnThursday · 22/10/2022 08:44

Totally unnecessary. White walls, neutral carpet/floor coverings then dress it up with pink soft furnishings. Then it's easy to change again when she moves on from pink.

Sillystripytail · 22/10/2022 08:46

We're moving soon and DS wants his room to be red. I haven't thought of a solution yet cause I want him to choose as it is his room but red is just so bright and it gives me a headache to think about. I think I might just do one wall red but what for the rest? White would look too stark next to red I think.

Fuckallthetories · 22/10/2022 08:52

Which colours do you think are most “pale bubblegum pink?”
dulux sweet pink
dulux pretty pink
fartow and ball Middleton pink
Farrow and ball nancys blushes

thanks

and which do you think are most pale turquoise (I’ve chosen that as an accent)

f&b Dix blue
F&b blue ground
dulux lagoon falls
dulux marine splash

thanks!

My DDs’ (3 and 5) bedroom walls are pink and purple 🤷🏻‍♀️ They also have a purple carpet, and pink fluffy beanbags. Why the hell not, they absolutely love it. Walls are Dulux blossom white and violet white if you’re interested. It honestly looks lovely!

whoruntheworldgirls · 22/10/2022 08:56

We have this in one room and it's beautiful, maybe this and a feature wall in a brighter pink? My daughter has violet white on 3 walls then a brighter purple on one wall with a wall sticker of a tree to break it up

Davethecat2000 · 22/10/2022 08:56

@Fuckallthetories ( love the name!), my DD's room is painted in Nancy's Blushes and Arsenic.

@SNWannabe yes it was made for DD by a lady on Etsy, she uses vintage fabrics. She made her curtains too!

WashableVelvet · 22/10/2022 09:17

Nancy’s blushes is very bubblegum. We have it in bathroom and I wish we didn’t!

Calamine is gorgeous. We had it in a room with pale greys on other walls and that was very grown up, but with brighter pink accessories would also work great I think.

Not used Middleton pink.

ladygindiva · 22/10/2022 09:19

Dd wanted a pink room , I found a lovely very light pink at Wilko. I forget what it's called but it's not got that sicky pink element to it. We did a navy feature wall with stars on it, matches really nicely.

YellowTreeHouse · 22/10/2022 09:36

Pick two pinks of your liking and let her choose between them. That way she still gets a choice but it’s a choice you’re happy with.

Whenever presenting toddlers and young children with options you should only do two so it’s not overwhelming and it should be two that you’re happy with so everyone’s a winner.

TootsAtOwls · 22/10/2022 09:39

Honestly it's easier and cheaper to repaint walls than it is to paint furniture and replace all the room's accessories! I'm glad you're going for the pink!

Fuckallthetories · 22/10/2022 09:45

I will give her the choice between nancys blushes and Middleton pink. But she is not choosing the colour for the other 2 walls!

You could try what I did when my DS was going through orange phase

paint room absolutely neutral

get around 6-8 thin cheap canvas boards - as big as you can afford and blank. And then a lot of tester pots in colours she likes- all shades of pink or just one. paint the canvas board- I got him to do this himself, it was a mix of plain, plain with squiggles of contrast, splashes etc…or you could get some stencils. Make it her work if possible with you helping.

stick to walls with command strips to make 1 or 2 feature walls.

add cheap accessories in same colours - cushions, a throw,

even curtains you can egg a pair of cheap neutral colour ones and then buy some pink ribbon and iron on bondaweb tape and add ribbon onto the plain ones

All Of which can be easily removed and replaced with her coolteeenage colour as and when you agree to upgrade
