I’m guessing not otherwise people would rob them left right and centre!

bought now Ex a phone, he was going to pay me back, he didn’t, I now have the phone but he’s refusing to give me the Apple ID or pin code so it’s essentially a v pricey paperweight.

I cannot for the life of me find any record of my purchasing it, I must’ve stupidly deleted it

im guessing there’s nothing to be done but holding out some hope!

As someone said, try one of those dodgy phone repair places. Must be some way of doing it or why would people steal them

I am thinking this must be the case, mobile phone theft is really high here so there must be a way round it!

There does seem to be options to do a factory reset/open the phone without a passcode @MyMomUsesColorSafeBleach, I've just googled and a fair few came up, perhaps try some of them before you give up and take it to a dodgy repair shop!

Factory reset will not remove apple id.
