Periods after Mirena coil inserted

I had a polyp removed last week, hysteroscopy and mirena inserted. I had slight bleeding afterwards and then my period started yesterday morning with slight cramps but cramps were worse this morning. I'm hoping things settle down after a couple more days bleeding and then bleeding stops. Did anyone have issues after similar? Did your periods stop completely? I hope I've made the right decision. She recommended mirena after the polypectomy. I'm 47, periods still regular.

i sometimes have a bleed after hysteroscopies. Not so much now after 20 months on a mirena and having had my polyps taken out. I’ve had five hysteroscopies now.

I don’t have periods any more though.

Good to hear. I was kind of wondering why I needed a coil. I get the odd bad period when I'd be lying on the floor with bad cramps, near vomiting, diarrhoea. Still regular as clockwork. Gynae thought because of my age and having polyp removed it's a good idea to insert mirena at same time so I went for it. Anyway, I'm only a few days post op so early days

No periods on mine - I'm on my 3rd Mirena. I'm 49 & I was told last time that it also acted a low dose HRT - certainly I'm not suffering so far with any menopausal symptoms

I had spotting for about 6 months, and I still get very light periods.

lndnbrdge91 · 20/10/2022 21:46

I have had mine about 15 months and have had no periods since.

lndnbrdge91 · 20/10/2022 21:47

I used to get such painful periods like you and could not move/do normal tasks. It's been such a relief for me and I'm so glad I had it done. Hope you feel better soon and it helps you too

Shitfather · 20/10/2022 22:32

I wonder if it’s post-op bleeding or, as you said, period as Mirena hasn’t had time to settle. It has been life changing for me , and no nasty side effects.

ConfusedHur · 21/10/2022 14:54

I've been crampier than a normal period. Hope it eases up soon.

I had a mirena to supposedly cure heavy bleeding due to fibroids. Sadly it had the opposite effect, along with period pains like I’d never had in my life. After a year of hell it bled itself out.

ConfusedHur · 21/10/2022 23:08

I know I need time to let it settle- it's a week since I had it done.

I’m a couple of weeks into my first Mirena (previously had a copper one). Was told they should get lighter over the course of months rather than suddenly stopping, if that helps. Due my first period since having it put in next week so hoping it’s not too brutal!

Mildred007 · 21/10/2022 23:29

I had limited bleeding after each insertion but am on my 2nd coil and no periods thereafter. I've also read that it's classed as some kind of HRT.

ConfusedHur · 22/10/2022 16:10

I'm beginning to feel down in myself already with the bleeding and cramps. My period was due all right but I'm bleeding more than normal and for longer. I had to come off the progesterone-only pill when I was in my 30s as I bled for months and am wondering if I'm going to have the same issues now. Any advice on how long I should give it?

I have a mirena and I have periods every month. My consultant said roughly 1/3 of women stop having periods, 1/3 have no change and 1/3 have changes to their cycles.

emmathedilemma · 22/10/2022 17:42

In my experience, they’ll tell you wait 3-6 months for it to settle. I think if it’s going to it will by then and if it’s hasn’t it probably won’t. I also bled for weeks on end with the progesterone only pill. I fear some of us just don’t get on with hormonal things!

quiteathome · 22/10/2022 18:29

I have normal- heavy periods with mine. Didn't change anything really.

Uffizi1 · 22/10/2022 18:31

I bled for 4 months on the Mirena, it stopped about a week ago. I’m hoping permanently!

Did you have a better experience with Mirena?

No, see my post above!!

ConfusedHur · 06/12/2022 09:53

So I have the Mirena just over 7 weeks now. I'm bleeding heavily, like a normal period, about every 2 weeks and heavy brown discharge every day in between. I don't think I'm going to be able to stick this. I was as regular as clockwork before. I'm also starting to feel depressed with it.

GranolaHolmes · 09/01/2023 13:37

How are you getting on OP?

I'm having the same symptoms as you said in your most recent post but after 3 months of progesterone only pill. GP wants me to consider mirena next.

ConfusedHur · 14/01/2023 08:29

I've been getting what seems like a period every 2 weeks, still light spotting then in between. It's almost 3 months now but the advice seems to be to give it 6 months so will stick it out until then.

SnappyDragony · 14/01/2023 09:10

I'm similar to you, OP. Had the mirena in June for heavy painful periods, and whilst it has lightened them I still get the random sharp cramps every now and then and bleed for much longer now, so lighter flow but lasts for 2 weeks or so. Hoping its still settling in, really.

Emmelina · 14/01/2023 09:50

Had mine early October. I’ve had the brown discharge on/off for weeks thing along with bleeding (not absolutely flooding like before though) every month til now. Then this month… a bit of blood on the tissue when I wiped for a day but nothing else!
I’m hoping that’s it settling now and it’s not about to kick my arse

KangarooKenny · 14/01/2023 09:56

Remember that if you’re perimenopausal your periods might have got closer together anyway, like mine did.
I had spotting for about 6/7 months and light periods, but by the time a year had passed I realised that I wasn’t getting spotting or periods any more.
I had it put in for heavy periods causing anaemia, and more frequent periods, so it’s worked for me - eventually !
