'Toast is a luxury'

Upsetting ITN report about just a few of the households scared stiff about affording to live. I feel so angry and worried and powerless about what's going to become of so many of us this winter and beyond.

This winter is going to be extremely tough for a lot of people.
The government should bring in rent control measures so at least families won't lose the roof over their heads.

I completely agree, it’s disgraceful that this is happening in a wealthy country like the UK.

Toast is a luxury but has her heating on every day and doesn't currently use food banks?

To do that you’d need to control also mortgages , as if the landlord can’t pay it then the lender will take it anyway.

I think combatting misinformation is so important here.

People are very worried about their financial situation & look at high wattage electrical items like toasters and kettles without realising that they are used for only minutes and so the cost per use is still low.

There was a good thread about this a few weeks back.

Isn’t she on the north east coast though?

Also it depends on the insulation and construction of the house. We are renting at the moment and I don’t know what the issue is with the house, it’s a relatively new build but it is FREEZING, even my dad who is half man half fish and hasn’t had his own heating on since March in wet cold NI, complains about the chill off our house. Thank god we’re moving soon, just praying for a mild winter.

As in the thermostat is at 12 and it’s come on a couple of times already. I visited london recently and it’s like being on a different continent, so much warmer!

Heating on for an hour a day. Working 5 days a week in a physical job at the age of 65. Don't be a dick

Yes! People will find this winter difficult but latching onto the "toast is a luxury" statement is nonsensical.

North Shields is on the NE coast and it gets very cold up here. It's quite exposed and windy as well.
