What is your very first memory?

OP posts:
HighlandPony · 18/10/2022 20:43

I don’t think I was quite three yet but I remember rolling off the settee at my grans and splitting my head open on the fireplace then I remember telling people it was glued shut.

Hellocatshome · 18/10/2022 20:45

I remember going to pick my brother up from school with my mum when I must have been 3 as I wasn't at school yet. Someone let me hold their dogs lead as I loved dogs. I kind of lost interest and let go and the dog ran off and everyone was chasing it and then I got told off.

Floralnomad · 18/10/2022 20:45

Getting our family dog from Battersea dogs home when I was about 2.5 , I get snippets from before that but that’s the first in detail of a whole event .

TeddyTed · 18/10/2022 20:48

Napping on my mum’s lap in the living room
of our old house, I must have been about 3. They’re only snippets of memory though.

emmy4 · 18/10/2022 20:52

When I was 3 walking to nursery with my mam but I felt unwell but still wanted to go. When i arrived at nursery my best friend wasn't there as she was off poorly too so I cried and went back home.

ThirtyFourty · 18/10/2022 21:16

I remember wanting to talk fast/lots like adults do and just talking jibberish so that I sounded like a grown up. I don't remember much more than that about my early childhood and don't seem to remember many positive things from my childhood in general, which seems strange.

I hope my little one's first memories are positive ones!

XenoBitch · 18/10/2022 21:19

Stood up in a cot, and getting frustrated.

Mapletreelane · 18/10/2022 21:21

Had an operation to cut my tongue tie when I was 2 to 3 and recall playing with water and toys in a large sink / playing area in the hospital.

BeaLola · 18/10/2022 21:23

Somewhere before4-taking the drawing pin my brother gave me and on his instruction pushing it up my nose .... head size first

Imissmoominmama · 18/10/2022 21:23

Sitting under a tree, on a blanket. My mum had a little transistor radio and Sugar Sugar by the Archies was playing. Going off when the song was released, I must’ve been 3.

BertaHoon · 18/10/2022 21:26

Whooping cough. I think I just accepted at the age of 3 that life was very tiring.

Benjispruce4 · 18/10/2022 21:26

Getting weighed at the local clinic. It was in a yellow plastic sort of cradle/chair. Was under 3 according to my mum.

KangarooKenny · 18/10/2022 21:28

I remember going to the baby/child clinic, and getting bitten by a dog, both before I started school.

Watchthesunrise · 18/10/2022 21:32

Being in hospital and my aunt giving me a toy rabbit, age 3
Sitting in the sun listening to a story on the radio, age 3
Looking at a picture of Jesus on my bedroom wall, age 3
Eating a wax candle with my older brother, age 3

Bigslippers · 18/10/2022 21:33

Being in a pram and staring up at a Christmas tree. I couldn’t have been a baby but a toddler as the pram my mum had was like a bloody tank made of metal with wheels like a watermill
I can see it now it was a dark green monstrosity and was later used to store coal

WeAllHaveWings · 18/10/2022 21:35

Mum bringing my new baby sister home from hospital when I was around 3ish.

MonkeyPuddle · 18/10/2022 21:37

Not sure but it’s either looking at a big spider plant in our downstairs loo or being at my aunties while my mum was at work. Maybe 5 years old.

MarmiteCoriander · 18/10/2022 21:44

I remember toilet training and standing outside the front door with dad frantically trying to unlock the door. I must have been 2-2.5? I still recall standing there with 'big girl knickers with barbie on the front' and the feeling of the poo dropping into them!!! I felt dreadful that I couldn't hold it and had to waddle to the bathroom!

Next memory soon after was travelling on a sleeper train with my mum when I was about 2.5yrs. I recall the fold down bunk bed she slept on above me, and a sink that also folded down from the wall to wash hands and face. We visited old friends with horses, and I remember riding in the saddle with the elderly husband once at the destination.

AdoraBell · 18/10/2022 22:31

Sitting on my DF’s lap in a room I didn’t recognise with people I didn’t know. I spoke to him about it as it was so vague I thought I had remembered a dream. He confirmed it was his family, only time I saw them, and I was about 2/2.5 yrs old.

SpottyStripyDuvet · 18/10/2022 22:33

I remember being at the house of one of my Dad's friends. I was confused about why me and Dad were there and Mum wasn't. She was in hospital having my brother and obviously Dad couldn't possibly manage to look after his own daughter so we went to a friend's house. This means I can date it precisely to being 3 years, 2 months, 3 weeks and 5 days.

notangelinajolie · 20/02/2023 01:29

I was 2 years 9 months.
I remember vividly my dad holding me up at a glass window and looking through to see my new baby brother being held up in the arms of a nurse.

No clue why I didn’t get to see him by my mums bedside but it was the 1960’s and I don’t think even dads were allowed in outside of visiting - never mind excited big sisters.
I also remember my dad taking me to the cinema. Bless him, my mum would have been in the maternity hospital for at least 7-10 days back then.
I loved my dad to bits. He was such a worrier and fussed about everything. It must have been so stressful being in sole charge of a 2 year old. Thinking about it now makes my heart glow.

HarrietSchulenberg · 20/02/2023 01:52

Waking up in my cot and starting to cry as it was dark, then crying louder until the landing light came on and my Mum arrived. She took me into her room and I remember lying on the big bed looking at the wardrobe while Mum went out of the room (probably for a wee) and the bedside light was on. Then she came back and all was right with my world. I was young enough not to be able to talk as I couldn't call for my Mum, just cry.
I've just realised that I'm lying next to that same wardrobe as I have it now. I'm 52 so it was about 51 years ago.

Surplus2requirements · 20/02/2023 01:53

3 may 4, standing at the top of the stairs and having a memory I could sort of jump and float slowly down. I remember feeling doubt and don't actually remember jumping but my Mum confirms I did.

Nothing but a few bruises and a few years off her life she says.

MrsAvocet · 20/02/2023 02:06

I think I remember the moon landing. I would have been just 3. But I'm not sure if it is a true memory or whether it's that I have seen it on tv many times since and I've been told that I watched it at the time so I've convinced myself that I remember it.
Other than that I have a vivid memory of drinking orange squash and eating a rich tea biscuit at a pre school play group and of my Mum tucking me into bed in a caravan on holiday in Wales, both when I would have been around 3.

Beeswood · 20/02/2023 02:37

My first memory is finding a jam sandwich on the pavement outside the house and eating it!
