Laundry detergent that smells nice NOT of Fabreeze <angry face>

We have used Arial Gel for ages, but they seem to have changed the formulation and now it smells of Fabreeze. The same thing happened with Persil a while ago too. (I hate that smell, it reminds me of a living in a student house with flatmates who used it instead of washing.)
I went into LIDL today and bought one of their brands - Lavender and Chamomile scented and that smells of bubblegum Slushies.
I know I am being a bit of OTT but I just want something that smells of washing powder.
Can you recommend any liquids that have a subtle scent?

I use Ariel powder, it's the best bio powder and it has a nice clean smell.

I like daz. Can't describe it but not of febreze.

chillinwithmygnomies · 18/10/2022 01:46

I like Ariel or Fairy powder, hate the smell of febreze so avoid anything with it in, I did buy a big box of Tesco non bio washing powder to try out but it doesn't really have a lasting scent other than 'clean' it's good on dark loads but I stick to Ariel for the school shirts and whites.

Floralnomad · 18/10/2022 01:55

Ariel powder just has a clean detergent smell .

wibblewobbleball · 18/10/2022 02:47

Fairy non bio with white comfort conditioner. Clothes smell softly of washing powder 👍

IamThegreaterMole · 18/10/2022 03:59

Do you use fabric conditioner? Lenor summer breeze is lovely, it just smells sort of fresh, not particularly floral or strong, just really nice. I love sniffing my washing when I take it out

MsPrism · 18/10/2022 07:42

Thanks everyone.
No I don't use fabric conditioner, as I don't think our clothes really need it, despite us living in hard water area. I also worry how the two different scents would mix. Since we now have a large bottle of Arial to get through I put the wash on for another rinse and spin, but still the smell lingers.
I will defintely try some of your suggestions though - they are much appreciated 😊

Fairy is lovely. I buy it as a treat!

SmileyClare · 18/10/2022 07:59

You must have a very good sense of smell. My laundry smells of nothing if I just use detergent!

I'd suggest a small dose of fabric conditioner in your load. Anything with a "clean linen" scent smells lovely I think. Lenoir "fresh sheets" is a favourite of mine.

HouseBook · 18/10/2022 08:02

The liquid Fairy has recently had a scent added, it has a lingering perfume stink now, rather then the nice subtle smell it used to have.

Notjusta · 18/10/2022 08:04

Fairy non bio and fairy fabric conditioner - only one scent that way. Not sure how to describe it - a fresh/clean scent?

NightmareSlashDelightful · 18/10/2022 08:06

Can you do an extra rinse? Might diminish the scent a bit, at least while you use up the rest of the bottle.

DisforDarkChocolate · 18/10/2022 08:07

I use Splosh, none are highly scented but all lovely, I hate ones that make you feel like you've covered yourself in cheap bodyspray. They also have lovely fabric softeners too. I think I generally go for cotton flower, jasmine or camomile and lavender. All lovely and not overpowering.

HappyAsASandboy · 18/10/2022 09:29

Daz powder. Doesn't smell of much once it is rinsed out, but any smell that remains is just "washing powder". Definitely no fabric softener or febreeze smell.

It is also cheap, doesn't clog up your machine/pipes like gel/liquid, works well in hard water areas and is great on stains. Can't fault it!

I buy Sainsburys own brand nom bio liquid - hate laundry smelling of 'scent'. I don't know if it's just me but as I get older I seem to have a more heightened sense of smell some peoples laundry detergent/fabric conditioner smells make me feel🤢

Yes me too, but I’ve always disliked heavy chemical-scents.

thanks everyone for your help! 🙏

If you liked Ariel gel original smell like we do and now hate the new smell, like we do, then it may be useful to know the Ariel colour gel still has the old smell and they did not change that. We’ve swapped to the colour and washing smells really nice again
