The lettuce course!

Went to a well known chain of Steak restaurants for lunch today. In between the starter and the Main, we were served a massive chunk of iceberg lettuce, with a dressing on it. WTF is that all about?!! I assumed I'd get a solitary lettuce leaf on the same plate as my steak!!

TGI Fridays used to have something like this on their menu

Quitelikeacatslife · 16/10/2022 23:28

It's common in American restaurants to have a salad course
In France you'd get this after the main with cheese sometimes

Yes it's Miller & Carter. It's not compulsory to eat it first. You can eat it with your steak. It's an American thing to have a salad course.

Iceberg lettuce is pretty dull. I'd expect more exciting lettuce if it was presenting itself as a course.

The sauces are nice. I like the blue cheese and I visit M&C just for the camembert mash, mmmm

It was M&C I had the blue cheese. It was delicious. The whole meal was though! I was just a bit surprised by it!

Yes American restaurants do this. I like eating salad with my meal, not on its own.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/10/2022 05:29

We waited for the the rest of the meal but they didn't bring it. So we ate on its own!

Iceberg is my favourite lettuce! It's so cool and crispy.

Never been to M&C but now I want to go just to eat the lettuce.

Yes American restaurants do a salad course--what you are describing sounds like a wedge salad. Big wedge of iceberg, usually some sort of creamy dressing (eg bleu cheese), sometimes crispy bacon. Classic at steakhouses. Can be served with the starters, or between the starter and the main course.

(There's a bunch of other classic salads some serve--mixed greens, Caesar, spinach, chopped salad, tomato & onion. Must say I do love a good American steakhouse.)
