Do any of you use it? Please download it and have a look...so much food is donated from Tesco and Iceland etc that just goes to waste and it breaks my heart.

I love the Olio app and use it regularly! I’ve had some really good things from it!

I know I wish more people used it! What sort of things do you get?

I've used it but not many shops donate to it where I live, so a 15mins drive to collect some food to save the environment doesn't compute really. It has to be quite a lot of food to be worth it and it is put up quite late other than Sundays, often by the time it goes on at 10:30pm I can't be bothered to go out again.

Nothing on there when I joined, some old mouldy veg that was about it...

I've joined it but nothing on it, always shows as no listings near you, we don't have an Iceland so maybe that's why, I think the tesco gives a lot to our local food Bank.

I downloaded it a while ago.
It seems that some 'super savers' go and collect from a supermarket and then try and give it away to people local to them.
But, as a pp said, going out at night, driving to somewhere you don't know (even within a couple of miles) to collect a loaf of bread or bag of croissants doesn't really sit comfortably with me. Occasionally someone will have 38 bananas or something, but again - I can't eat that many before they go off, and the maths doesn't add up to go and collect, for the sake of 5 free bananas as a money saving thing.
It is good for people gifting non-food items (in a replacement for Freecycle way) but the food thing doesn't really sit that comfortable with me.

Is that all they have from collecting from Tesco or Iceland? These are the boxes we have in our area

I’ve had a variety of things - sandwiches, bread, a few ready meals, pastries!

Why don’t the shops just give the food away free with every purchase in the hour before closing time. It would reward customers and help them with the cost of living. I don’t see the point of apps that encourage people to use their cars to collect a few portions of short dated food.

Where abouts do you live? Busy city?

Takingabreakagain · 16/10/2022 23:59

Doesn't matter what time I try everything is always showing as just gone. If I have put any food items on there it always seems like the same people collect it but I never see anything available - perhaps there's not a big enough group of people in my area
More successfully I've used it to give away some nonfood items like toys and bedding
