Insurance renewal costs - customers being taken for mugs

My car and breakdown cover needed renewing. No claims made. Renewal is much higher than last year. For breakdown went online found same policy with same company for 25.00 cheaper. Car - told them I was unhappy as I had been with them for three years, instantly told I can have policy for 70.00 less. If I hadn't phoned and had just accepted policy I would be 90.00 worse off. I know that they are relying on people not having time or will to phone or shop around. There will be many people who do not have the means or energy or ability to do this. It is such robbery.

I'm pretty sure it's widely known that of course you don't accept any insurance quote without comparison shopping

Did you really not know, what do you think all the comparison websites are for

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/10/2022 11:37

Just doing the same thing!

mine with Esure was £192 last year, they’ve quoted £305 this year 😲

A quick look on some comparison websites and I can get the same cover with Churchill for £182, and then some cashback from Quidco.

Mine has gone down this year. Plus they made a point of emailing me to say that they now had to offer me the same rate as a new customer would get.

Our breakdown cover went up massively, despite no callouts. I get it, fuel's expensive, costs are rising, etc. Tried getting a quote for the same vehicle in a different name and bingo, half the price. I know this is common, but can't be doing with the bullshit. Went with someone else.
Other renewals have surprisingly gone down this year.

They aren’t allowed to charge you more than if you were a new customer so if you could get an identical quote cheaper from the same company I would challenge them on it

WeAreTheHeroes · 15/10/2022 11:49

Inertia selling, but bloody annoying. Some companies seem to be driven by new sales rather than retaining existing customers. Why would you stay with a company which tries to get you to accept their first, pathetic offer?

Just had house insurance quote and it's £40 less
