How to find a prisoner

Back in school we had a new pupil that had moved to our area from another part of the country. Got on really well, was a really good to me and I have some really good memories involving him. (Nothing romantic)
We lost touch when he moved back after school finished. The last I heard was he'd had a family tragedy but I had no way to contact him.

Every now and then I'll look for him on Facebook and found nothing. Recently I googled his name and roughly the area and found an article with the same name that had been sent to prison.
The offence was serious and he will be in prison a long time. The article itself is pretty vague, assault that left a person with long term injuries.

The article had no picture to confirm, nor do any of the other articles, no mention of an age. I can't be sure it's him but I'd like to find out.

If it is, I don't condone what he's done at all (if it's him). Yet still I'd really like to know, one way or the other if it's him or if I should continue looking for him.
I don't want anything for him but to know where he is, I know that sounds odd. People come and go but he was a big part of my life when it was really rough.

I don't want to visit but maybe send a letter.
Is there anyway to trace someone in prison without knowing where they are?

The only issue is you'd need some basic details about him. As far as I can think as a normal member of the public that's the only way to find him, unless you can somehow gather information from a community.

To write to him you'd need the details obtained from the find a prisoner service and prison number.
