Can’t separate the art from the artist

I’ve loved TRex for decades and had crush on Marc Bolan and thought he was so sexy. Watching 1971 on Apple TV and tried so hard to think it was of the times but no, he was a young adolescent predator.

I’m a big Marilyn Manson fan, it’s been tricky since he was outed.

I get how you feel.

I can’t listen to Lost Prophets either.

beguilingeyes · 12/10/2022 16:15

Oh lord, what's Marc Bolan done?

PointyFinger03 · 12/10/2022 16:15

It’s like a switch; I can’t support or get joy from ‘the artist’.

He said about them (the young girl fans) wanting his balls and filmed kissing very young girls backstage. I’m sickened

He’s gleeful

I can't listen to lost prophets, and I used to love them, saw them live quite a few times. But I can't do it. I also feel bad for the rest of the band.

PointyFinger03 · 12/10/2022 16:23

It’s just like…another one. I’m disgusted and I’m sure other fans would be seeing this

I think it’s particularly hard with music where the artist is inextricably linked with the art because a music recording is effectively a moment in time, a part of that person, their voice or musical talent, and doubly so a live performance. It’s easier with things like books or imagery where the artist isn’t visible/audible. Am I making sense? I’m not sure if I am explaining that very well.

PointyFinger03 · 12/10/2022 16:46

Yes, I understand, but visual/audio I think I’m out as I’m just taken back. My family love an old comedy so watched ‘see no evil, hear no evil’ last year (a million times not pc) and when a young kevin spacey came on I just froze, could not listen to his character at all

I still don’t know why Michael Jackson is played so much on so many radio stations, I have to turn off. I know in Jackson 5 he was young and innocent.

It's also not just about the art itself. In the case of Lost Prophets in particular, the artist can still benefit financially from the consumption of their art. Such as books being bought or films and music being streamed.

AnApparitionQuipped · 12/10/2022 16:57

I can easily separate the art from the artist. I just focus on the music/painting/film or whatever it is and don't think about who created it.

Lots of very talented people were unpleasant in various ways and to various degrees. Your field of artistic enjoyment would be small if you were only ever prepared to entertain the work of people whose values and behaviour were aligned with your own.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 12/10/2022 17:01

Oh bloody hell, I just bought a Marc Bolan t-shirt yesterday!! This is why you should never ever get a celeb tattoo.

Appalonia · 12/10/2022 17:20

I do get what you mean OP. Since Prince died, I've read a lot about how badly he treated both pp he worked with, and women he was romantically involved with, he did not come across well. I also recently read Rick James' autobiography and I really wish I hadnt! I still love their music but it's left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Tbh I don't know how you resolve this, you either stop listening to their music or you accept they were very flawed individuals and were indulged by the ( pretty sexist ) music industry as they were very talented and made them a lot of money?

LaPufalina · 12/10/2022 17:22

I've deleted all my Michael Jackson and R Kelly downloads (a lot of music!)

afaloren · 12/10/2022 17:26

I’m the same OP. I wish I didn’t know anything about any of them sometimes!

PointyFinger03 · 12/10/2022 17:35

I’m annoyed to know but that is selfish. So many male artists are so problematic, right up until today. I guess the best way would be to boycott all their music but that would be extremely hard. I’ve heard so much about individual artists but just seeing it on video turned my stomach
