Leather or fabric sofa with 2y/o and dogs?

Hi everyone, we need a new sofa and I'm currently having a debate with my DH about which will get least ruined between a fabric or leather sofa. We have a 2 y/o DS, a newborn arriving in Feb and two dogs (short haired, do moult). We currently have a leather sofa that I find so uncomfortable, we have always had (second hand) leather sofas. We're considering buying a new one, but my DH is objecting to paying £1000 for something that's inevitably going to get ruined.

My DH thinks leather sofas are better as don't get dog hair embedded in them, can wipe clean easier from sticky fingers or spills.

I would like a fabric sofa as think they just seem more cosy/comfy than leather, and my argument is they don't get scratched and mark as easily as leather. Our current one has so many scratches and marks that once they're there don't ever come out so looks a bit of a mess. Also liquid spills can stain the leather.

Please tell me which one you would vote for!

P.s. whichever we go for, it would be a dark colour - dark grey/black. No cream sofas here!

Leather.
Had ours with a dog and cat & before DC. Lasted until DC was 16 & even then the leather was in excellent condition but the sofa sagged a little and we couldn’t find someone in our area to respring.
No staining on the leather at all & minimum amount of scratches. It was an M&S one in chocolate.

We then had a second hand fabric one for a couple of years, threads and snags galore and I blamed the type of fabric.

Now have a new fabric one we’ve had for 4 months and cost £££ & there is already a tiny chocolate mark on it despite having fabric guard and a special cleaning kit!

Leather will look good longer ime.

Leather can be wiped down. Treat it with leather polish now and then yo keep it looking good.

leather all the way. I’m my experience dogs+small children =vomit, urine, food spillages, pen marks. All easier to clean out of leather than fabric although I agree fabric is MUCH comfier!

Fabric 100%

Washable. Dyeable. Comfortable.

I mean for me the very first function of a sofa is to be comfortable to sit on, how it looks is always secondary to that. I do not like to sit on leather or pleather. At all. I’ve pretty much always had dogs cats and children. And all colours of fabric sofas. They also lend themselves better to throws and strategic cushions that don’t then slide around.

Leather is so cold and uncomfortable, and everything slides off it - cushions, throws etc. Our old sofa had washable cotton covers, and we used washable throws for the dogs. That sofa lasted about 20 years! In your position I'd just buy a fabric sofa from IKEA and lots of washable throws.

I find fabric so much comfier than leather. Leather is cold and you slide off.
We hoover our fabric sofa every now and again. And use carpet cleaner spray for stains.

Try to get one with removal covers so you can wash them if you really need to. Ours has survived a very sicky baby brilliantly.

Leather every time! Easy to wipe down and perfectly comfortable.

Leather. Much more practical for spills and dog hair. In fact, recommend you get some leather leggings for maternity leave, sick and gunk wipes right off

GAW19 · 11/10/2022 21:49

We have fabric with a 3yo and 18mo, we also have a vax carpet cleaner that gets every stain out 😁
We got ours from SCS and they also do a warranty for X amount of years on the fabric too.
I really dislike leather sofas, so un-homely, sticky and uncomfortable

1000yardstare · 11/10/2022 21:51

Leather 100%. But not from sofology..they're shit.

Get throws for warmth. Baby sick,.wee, dog hairs wash out of them without you having to hover til dry.

karmakameleon · 11/10/2022 21:53

We have one leather and one fabric. The fabric looks better five years on but we do regularly clean it using the vax. The leather gets a polish too but you can’t do anything for the stains from spilt liquids and scratches.
