Best before dates

If chicken had a best before date of today and you opened it today and it was rancid, would you take it back to the shop? We are having a debate at work.

Probably not, no. I get my shopping delivered so taking it back would be a big convenience and I just don't have the time. I'd be annoyed though.

Inconvenience that should read!

Chicken will usually say “use by” rather than “best before” so in technical terms in the sense of the wording, it should still be fresh on the date it says it should be used by and supermarkets should honour it. Presume that’s what the argument was about?
