Do you tip your supermarket delivery driver?

I never do and it had never occurred to me. But a friend just told me they do and now I am wondering if my delivery drivers think I must live in the mean house.

No.

FreezyFreezy · 11/10/2022 14:25

No. I don't tip anyone though.

catinboots123 · 11/10/2022 14:27

No

HappydaysArehere · 11/10/2022 14:27

I do at Christmas even if it is a different one as if everyone did they would all get something. Probably a fiver.

During the hot weather in summer I took a tray of diet Pepsi cans out to the bin men (they started at 6am during the heatwave to beat the heat), and offered the Tesco delivery drivers a cold drink to take with them, which some accepted.

Cash does feel a bit weird (and sounds like prohibited for some), but offering a can of pop or a snack/chocolate is another way to show you appreciate them, and might be less awkward maybe

No never even occurred to me to tip my supermarket delivery person. I resent tipping culture. I mean, I do do it for the hairdresser and uber because I would look bad if I didn't...but I hate it. Price is x so pay x, no haggling, no tips, no special discounts, just pay what it says.

I keep a tub of celebrations by the door around Christmas time and offer them to any delivery drivers (parcel or groceries!) who come to the door. Postie gets a box of chocs and a Christmas card, but we have the same one every day and he always stops to chat.

Rest of the year, no I don't tip. Would feel odd handing over my change!

QuebecBagnet · 16/11/2022 17:11

No. Nor do I tip the checkout person

GarlicOnBeans · 16/11/2022 17:12

I do not nor the postie or anyone else.

Soproudoflionesses · 16/11/2022 17:30

No but l always give them an ice cream or cold can of drink on a hot day

Squiblet · 16/11/2022 17:37

Yes, I usually tip the Ocado guy if I have a couple of quid handy - more at Christmas/New Year's.

It's never been awkward. They always smile and look quite pleased!

iwishiwasonhol · 16/11/2022 17:56

nope because they arent allowed, although i work for a supermarket and i have had some through my till that say they are using their tips as they hand over lots of coins, i will offer a drink on a hot day/a choc from the tin at xmas whilst i unpack the crates

Chomolungma · 16/11/2022 17:57

No I don't.

Dayo84 · 04/09/2023 09:32

It depends on the company but we can accept tips at Ocado. Even their website says that we can be tipped. Some supermarkets don’t allow it.

It’s nice to receive them, but it’s not expected at all so don’t feel like we have a list in the depot with tippers and non-tippers. If you don’t want to tip don’t think we leave with a bad impression, we are just glad to have completed a delivery.

I was soaking wet from rain and delivering one afternoon when I was tipped £5 plus a bottle of something orange, a packet of crisps and a chocolate biscuit. I was happier for the food and drink as I hadn’t eaten all day as it can be difficult to take a proper break in the 8 hours on the road. If you fall behind you are playing catch-up for the rest of the route.

But, yeah, don’t feel obliged to tip, guilty if you can’t or even awkward if you do want to tip.

I did see a comment about just dumping shopping at the door. Ocado drivers are meant to offer to take it in, I find most customers prefer it to be handed to them at the door or placed down at the door for them to take in at their leisure. If you ever want it taking in just ask the driver, we don’t bite. Honest.

Our regular delivery guys and postie get fresh eggs from us. Always seem pleased to get them.

travelogue · 04/09/2023 09:39

Tried to tip the Waitrose delivery guy at Christmas once and he said it wasn't allowed. So no. But then I don't get groceries delivered anymore, except at Christmas!

MitchellMummy · 04/09/2023 09:42

Never. But did offer cold drinks when it was stupidly hot.

Lentilweaver · 04/09/2023 09:44

My Tesco delivery men are lovely. Always smiling. It didn't occur to me to tip them though, and I see upthread it is prohibited. Also I have gone totally cashless.

Herewe · 04/09/2023 09:50

Nope. I have offered them one of the ice lollies or a drink if it’s been hot weather. Other than that I just chat if they are chatty. I can’t afford to tip on top and stopped tipping when whoever I was paying was most likely earning more than me.
