It depends on the company but we can accept tips at Ocado. Even their website says that we can be tipped. Some supermarkets don’t allow it.
It’s nice to receive them, but it’s not expected at all so don’t feel like we have a list in the depot with tippers and non-tippers. If you don’t want to tip don’t think we leave with a bad impression, we are just glad to have completed a delivery.
I was soaking wet from rain and delivering one afternoon when I was tipped £5 plus a bottle of something orange, a packet of crisps and a chocolate biscuit. I was happier for the food and drink as I hadn’t eaten all day as it can be difficult to take a proper break in the 8 hours on the road. If you fall behind you are playing catch-up for the rest of the route.
But, yeah, don’t feel obliged to tip, guilty if you can’t or even awkward if you do want to tip.
I did see a comment about just dumping shopping at the door. Ocado drivers are meant to offer to take it in, I find most customers prefer it to be handed to them at the door or placed down at the door for them to take in at their leisure. If you ever want it taking in just ask the driver, we don’t bite. Honest.
