Tipping at US Hotels

I’m travelling to Orlando shortly. We are staying at a hotel which has the service where the people grab your bags from the taxi and put them on a trolley. They are then brought to your room by someone different.

I know you have to tip the person who brings the bags to your room but are you still expected to tip the person who takes the cases out of the taxi and wheels them into the lobby?

I’ve no idea so any input would be greatly appreciated! I absolutely know that this is a first world problem but didn’t want to offend anyone at the hotel.

Good question, and I'm watching with interest because I cant remember and I'm in California in 3 weeks!

What we have always done with Room Service is before we go make up little bags containing some English chocolate and a couple of dollars to leave out daily. Just things that they cant get over there like bags of buttons etc Thats always been really well received.

Yes, you have to tip everyone. If you don't want to pay for something then do it yourself.

I think that's part of the issue at hotels; they grab your bags before you can get to them yourself. I suppose the easy thing is to wear all your clothes at once and not take any luggage.
(🤔Might be a bit hot in Orlando though... )

Yes @TwoLeftSocksWithHoles thats what I mean - they literally descend before you’re even out of the taxi.

I will just keep a few dollars in my hand and hand them out like confetti when I arrive!

Are you sure the hotel isn’t already charging you a porterage charge for the staff who put the luggage in the trolley? And therefore you only need to tip the guy who sends it to your room.

After all, how would you tip the first person if you don’t see them? I used to work at a hotel and they charged £1 per bag (this was 10 years ago) for unloading the case from the bus, tagged it and took it up to the room. This was charged to the tour company and the cash was given to the staff on concierge.

I would just give $5-10 for the person who actually brings it to the room.

Just read again and realised they are taking the bags from the taxi. So I would do $5 in the taxi and another $5 on arrival to the room.
