Hi, just after a bit of advice and to see if anyone has been through what I’m experiencing and how long did it last 😫 I’m. 7 months pregnant and my left side ribs have been hurting for 4 days now, can’t cough, laugh, talk at times, iv spoken to the hospital and said it sounds like iv pulled a muscle, it’s the worst pain ever, sneezed and made it worse, any advice on how to ease it would be very welcomed, at the mo ok using a hot water bottle and paracetamol,

Rest is all you can do.

Pulled muscles can take a while to heal, especially in awkward places like the ribs! Also 7 months pregnant and think I pulled a muscle in my right shoulder blade.

Galaxy27 · 11/10/2022 00:23

Oh no, hope you’re ok, nothing worse, my left shoulders starting to burn, so hope that doesn’t go as well, I just feel totally useless, can’t lie down properly, and if I need to cough iv gotta bend right over and squeeze my ribs, they did say can take a week or longer but when I sneezed feel like it’s set me back, my 4th child bit have never experienced this before 😫

You have my sympathy.

Not pregnant but I pulled a rib muscle last week and it's still really painful.

Like yourself my shoulder (and back) are now hurting because of the odd positions I'm adopting to protect using my ribs so those muscles are overcompensating/guarding.

I've had days when I think it's getting better and then I'll move and suddenly I'm in pain or a cough/sneeze and it's super sore again.

Yesterday I got a bout of hiccups and I was just sobbing with the pain (and the anticipation of it re: the next hiccup).

I've been told they can take up to 6 weeks to heal depending on how badly you've torn the muscle.

Pain killers aren't really doing much for me either.

I'm not in a position to fully rest as I can't take the time from work, so that doesn't help, though thankfully I don't have a physically strenuous job.

What does seem to help is tightly bandaging my ribs (bought loads of non stretchy bandages) to try and support and immobilise the muscle as best I can plus a warm compress as often as I can manage it (I've got the chance to get to a chemist tomorrow so going to buy any try a heat patch, but thus far my child's beady bear that gets heated in a microwave has become my favourite "cuddle").

I feel like crying, can’t get comfy to go to sleep at all, it’s constant pain, got a water bottle and had paracetamol but that’s all I can do for pain relief, I hope it doesn’t last too much longer 😫

Deep heat might help, but don't use anything with ibuprofen in it.

I actually had inflamed ribs in my first pregnancy and it was hell, felt like I was being stabbed by a knife. And nothing can be taken as anti inflammatories can't be used during pregnancy.

Just try alternating cold and warm treatments and snaffle as many pillows as you can to find yourself as comfortable position as you can.

Galaxy27 · 11/10/2022 05:04

I know, been told to phone gp if ot gets worse to see if they can give me anything, but not much when you’re pregnant, it’s so painful isn’t it, I can’t sleep, just had a bath and it’s eased slightly but not much, how long did yours last for, been painful since Friday for me but was manageable, sort of 😫 but since iv sneezed I can hardly breathe normal

You can try rubbing some comfrey oil, that's a very safe herb and can ease that sort of pain.

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 11/10/2022 10:46

I was told not to use deep heat.

When pregnant with dd i had pulled a muscle. Dd. Was having a kick fest and my rib cracked! They x rayed reluctantly as said was rare for a baby to do that. Its the only explanation as i wasnt doing anything that could have done it.
I was due anyday. I ended up being induced. Omg i dont know what was worse the labor or trying to push with a cracked rib

Galaxy27 · 11/10/2022 12:51

Oh no, that’s what I’m dreading, I’m 31 weeks at the mo, so fingers crossed it’s well gone by then, but I couldn’t think of anything worse 😫 can’t even laugh at the mo, phoned the hospital twice and don’t seem too concerned, but think iv pulled trying not to wee when iv coughed 🥴 then the sneeze has just wiped me out, waiting on the dr to ring me bk at the mo, to see what else I can have to ease the pain, as if I go off work now with it, they’ll put me straight on maternity which doesn’t start till 7th nov

So sorry your still not feeling better.

I have a few hours when its manageable then a sneeze or similar leaves me hurting badly again.

I think today though I'm starting get more periods of relative "comfort" rather than wanting cry in my cuppa.

Tried deep heat today and it wasn't any more effective than a heated beady bear so I wouldn't splash the cash, pregnant or not.

Galaxy27 · 12/10/2022 01:07

still feel like crap 😫 gp said to have co codemol for the pain but read it wasn’t recommended, rang the hospital to check it was ok and they told me to come in, only just got bk now form 7pm, feel it was a total waste of time, treated me like I was there cos I was worried about baby’s movements, which I made clear I wasn’t, (never stops moving) iv sat there for hours getting monitored for movements feeling worse cos the beds are not comfy one bit waiting for the dr, still not seen him and have ended up coming home, I only wanted to know if it was safe to have the tablets, I thought with them telling me to come in they were gonna check my ribs or somthing and give me a better pain relief, gonna get a warm bath and see if it eases up so I can try and get some sleep, had about 3 hours since Sunday night 😣

Posting again in sympathy.

I've had a really bad day today.

As per my previous post, I thought I was on the mend but it's been as bad as I've ever experienced.

Walking hurts, moving hurts, breathing hurts. It's like the muscle is just spasming at the slightest use.

I'm really fed up.

I know I'm not doing myself any favours as I'm working and generally having to "push through" but it's depressing that it's getting worse not better even when I'm doing my best to be gentle to myself.

Goodness knows how it must be being heavily pregnant on top Flowers.

If it helps you to know, I've not found much difference in pain relief from paracetamol vs others you can't take in pregnancy, so you're not missing out much there.

Strapping and warm compresses give the best relief for me.

Galaxy27 · 14/10/2022 20:37

sorry your still sore, same here, it has eased slightly, and managed to get time off work and someone to take my daughter to school, so that helped, I know if I sneeze again it’ll go again tho, still hurts to cough or laugh 😫 I hope you feel better soon, as you say, there is nothing to help it is there, iv been getting warm baths, and got a hot water bottle stick to my side constantly, tying it under my housecoat, I just hope it’s better by the time I give birth, it’s actually scaring me that it may not be

BreadInCaptivity · 14/10/2022 22:05

@Galaxy27 I'm really feeling for you.

Can't imagine dealing with this and being pregnant.

Sending all my best wishes you recover before birthing.

Today for me has been slightly better. I'm not hurting at every motion, but I'm having to be super careful about how I move.

I had a dreaded sneeze today that hurt like hell but interestingly the after effects were not as worse as in previous days - which I'm taking as a positive sign.

I'm still getting best relief by strapping my sons microwaved beddybear to my ribs - looks ridiculous - like I'm growing a sci-fi monster 😂

Galaxy27 · 15/10/2022 11:40
