Where to stop - Edinburgh to Derbyshire

Going down to Derbyshire from Edinburgh for the October holidays next week. It's a 5 hour drive so we probably need to stop on the way. I don't really know that part of England - is there anywhere nice to stop halfway?
DCs aren't very young - 9, 12 and 14, so doesn't need to cater for wee ones.

I assume you are looking at an overnight stay....

Going down the M6... Kendal is good. Not far off the motorway and small enough to find where you are staying. Slightly further north Penrith is under rated - close to the motorway, places to eat and hotels close together. And has the best chippy ever.

If you are heading down the A1/M1 somewhere like York. I do like Northumberland but that will leave quite a long drive on the second day.

Mainsgill Farm shop - about 5 miles off the A1 on the A66

That's quite a detour. I would suggest somewhere in North Yorkshire.
