Utility Warehouse - help me explain it to DH

DH was chatting to his colleague today who mentioned she had started doing Utility Warehouse. He had never heard of it and was curious. I do all the utilities stuff in our house. She said she started because she wanted to save people money this winter.

He came home with this nugget of information and I immediately said absolutely not. It's an MLM and whilst not illegal is unethical. She'll be trying to recruit him and other colleagues before they know it.

He challenged me on how I know this and a quick Google showed him it's an MLM. But I couldn't convincingly articulate why it is a bad idea. Can the collective minds of MN help me see either way whether I am right or not? I'm prepared to be proved wrong but equally would be happy if my gut instinct was proved right.

You're right in that it's an MLM but I don't think it's very extreme. I've been signed up to UW for years. The lady who I signed up with mentioned once about me joining and selling it, I said no, it's never been mentioned since.

I have had zero problems with them in the time since I've been signed up, their customer service is very good

So I'm not sure whether that's helpful or not but they've been very good providers

You dont get the best offers unless you take multiple products. Depends what you're looking for I suppose but the other products aren't of use to me

If you normally deal with the utilities i would challenge him right back. Why does he feel its better than what you are doing? What could you do yourself to make it better without using utilities warehouse? If he says i don't know it sounded good then you have your answer . Shes got a pretty face 🙄

You'll only save on your utilities if you pay over the odds for your broadband and mobile phones so pointless and inflexible. Or if you get commission by signing up other people, so immoral and all your friends, family and work colleagues will hate you.

Moneysavingexpert.com did an analysis a few months ago. It wasn't bad when everyone was scrambling for fixes to avoid £5k utility bills this winter but now the government has stepped in that probably no longer applies.

I'm with UW. It's a variable tarriff and has a price cap guarantee which means what I pay per unit will always be under the price cap. I have gas and electric and no other services. I've never signed up anyone.

Thanks for all the responses. It's an interesting mix and similar to what I've tried to find. Not one of the worst but also not necessarily working in people's best interests.
