British gas PAYG smart meter £66 put on electricity not gas!

Hello to everyone,
I live in a one bed flat and use about £5 a week electric (don’t watch tv, no kids living at home etc). British Gas have applied the £66 onto my electricity meter (I have a PAYG smart meter) obviously I would like the £66 to go on the gas for heating.
I’ve contacted British gas through the app but after 45 mins of waiting I was transferred to a different department who then lost connection. I also have an issue of my gas/electricity usage being updated.
so does anybody know if the British Gas are going to be applying all the other payments onto the electricity meter or are they going to alternate monthly? As i don’t really use much electric I wont be saving that amount to put towards my gas which is my biggest expense.
thank you.

My understanding is that all payments are being applied to electricity accounts.

dementedpixie · 07/10/2022 18:40

As far as I know its the electricity accounts that the money will be applied to as not everyone has gas.

Maybe they can transfer the funds to the gas account but that's something you'd need to ask them

HappyHappyHermit · 07/10/2022 18:41

Agree with the above, electricity is universal but many, like us, do not have a gas supply.

All of them are going to electric accounts as not all households have gas. You can call and ask if they will move it but it has been publicised for a long time as going on electric.

Shinyhappyperson22 · 07/10/2022 18:43

Ours isn’t even going on the bills it’s going in the bank after the direct debit clears… would rather it off the bill directly tbh.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 07/10/2022 18:44

all payments are going on electricity as not everyone has gas, although my payment came into my bank account not credited to my bill

Icantthinkattheminute · 07/10/2022 18:49

Thank you for your replies didn’t even think that not everyone has gas. I will try and contact them but it doesn’t sound hopeful.

I hope you can transfer it, seems silly otherwise. There are two of us in a three bed semi and electric is £480 a year on the new rates. So if we were on prepay we'd only be saving £40 a month on electric to put on the gas instead. Annoying when you want the money for when it's cold!

PureBlackVoid · 07/10/2022 18:58

They provide vouchers if they can’t apply the £67 to the meter, it’s worth asking if they would do so in your case too.

I wonder if they are able to transfer credit from one account to the other, with it being a smart meter or you may have to request refunds as and when you have enough credit (not sure how faffy BG are with refunds though)

SeasonFinale · 07/10/2022 19:02

Don't you have both with British Gas and it therefore is a combined bill and combined direct debit so it won't actually matter as the credit balance on electricity if it is credit is offset against the debit balance of the gas.

Bloody hell some people are never happy 🙈.

Collywibbles · 07/10/2022 19:08

It is being applied to electricity bills not gas because most people have an electricity bill. Although SSE / Ovo took the normal DD and credited our bank account so who knows.

Icantthinkattheminute · 07/10/2022 19:16

I do have both with British Gas but it’s a PAYG smart meter. As i don’t use much electric I wont be using enough to save on the gas. I know the old style PAYG meters are getting vouchers, not sure if they will only be applicable to electric?

I guess you will end up in credit which you can then ask to be refunded?

ScruffyGrape · 04/12/2022 19:59

Is anyone with British Gas and get the £66 paid on to their meter? I remember seeing the October one but not November's. I messaged them on Friday to ask and they said it has definitely been paid on and then randomly I had an extra £30 added! I'm guessing either an early top up got stuck and didn't go through when they were looking. They realised no she didn't, let's give her £30 or I am really hoping that wasn't December's installment and they have given me the wrong amount.

itsthelittlethinggs · 04/12/2022 20:33

Contact them and ask them to transfer the credit over won’t be an issue we’ve done this

Moneysaving Expert have looked at this.

www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2022/11/smart-prepay-bill-support-transfer-gas-electricity-update/

It says that BG allow the money to go onto the electricity account only, which obviously doesn't help you.

If you're in hardship, you could try and apply for a grant. If not, can only suggest you allow the credit to build up and ask for it back so you can use it to buy gas credit.

Hopefully you can get it sorted before you're in a position where you need gas and can't pay for it.

There's always the ombudsman. If you reliably use very little electricity and build up a big credit, even in winter, they should let you have the money to help pay for gas over winter. So if BG aren't sympathetic, try OFGEM. Or resolver.co.uk to ask for the credit to be transferred over.

I have not received the £66 on my Smart Meter for December. I appreciate it is only the 7th but the last two months were paid 2 December. Is there any information regarding this.

ScruffyGrape · 08/12/2022 04:44

I am the same. I went to ring them yesterday and pre recorded message said to wait until the 9th. I decided to wait as they would only fob me off before that date.
