How did the 5p bag charge become the 20p charge?

And some shops even 30p.
I feel so pissed off with myself that I forgot my bags.

Just come out of poundland and had to buy a £1 bag as they didn't have 20p ones. I was tempted to spend the pound on some black bags and use one and then get some use out of the others.

What happens to the bag tax money now aswell?

It's up to store owners what they charge and what they do with the money. It's an optional purchase.

It's the same in boots. 20p for a paper bag that rips straightaway. I bought a reusable one for a pound last time and keep it in the car now

At least you’ll probably remember next time.

5p was a suggested charge....years ago ... like everything, they have gone up 🤷‍♀️

Google will have the answer. They should make plastic be more expensive, it never rots. After years of plastic bags not being free, I assume most people have a stash of them along with fabric bags and sturdy ones. I'm sure you can think of a way to store a bag in your pocket or handbag 😄

The goal of the bag charge was always purported to be a reduction in use of plastic bags, so if you really hate buying them then that has been successful at least!

Needmorelego · 06/10/2022 10:12

It started at 5p... people went "meh it's only 5p" so just paid for more bags everytime they went shopping.
Snuck up to 10p..... people went "meh it's only 10p" so just paid for more bags everytime they went shopping.
Snuck up again to 20p.....you get the picture.

I leave bags in the back of the car and under the passenger seat for easy access. Haven't yet had to pay...

Sainsburys put their bag price up ages ago, there are notices everywhere. I think there was a shortage at one point.

They aren't allowed to give free carrier bags anymore. The charge keeps going up to encourage people to use their own carrier bags
