Reading a few pages and realising you've not read anything

Does anyone else do this? I am starting a book that is supposed to be a page- turner. The first page had me interested and now I'm just thinking about 20 other things. I don't mind so much that I'm distracted, but just that I've turned pages and not realised I'm not actually 'reading' just registering the words somehow...
I've even turned back and tried again- several times- the same happened. Sometimes have this but this is the worst it's been!

Yes! After reading but not reading the same sentence a few times I have to shout to myself in my head 'you are going to concentrate on this bit!' and almost speed read to get myself past it.

Pixiedust1234 · 05/10/2022 22:33

Yes I do. Its my subconscious nagging me to do those jobs first. Apparently I'm not allowed to relax until they are done. Its annoying.

Only like all the time.

Sunnytwobridges · 05/10/2022 22:49

This is me for the past few years. I read and realized I've read nothing. My attention span is about zero these days. I hate it as I used to read about 50 books a year and now I can't get thru one.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 05/10/2022 23:17

Yep.

Jellybean23 · 05/10/2022 23:42

I often have to reread the first five or so pages until I get into the book. In my brain, it's like the light's on but no one's in.

Comforting to know I'm not alone.

Veryverycalmnow · 06/10/2022 18:36

Thanks for the reassurance. It's really annoying

I would love to read books like I did when I was in my teens and 20s, but it's virtually impossible now. My eyes are in one place and my brain in another. I blame being on the Internet all the time.

Bonjovispjs · 06/10/2022 19:31

This is why I don't read books. I think I just have a short concentration span 🤷🏻‍♀️

Threadkillacilla · 06/10/2022 19:34

I go through phases. I blame being online too much and not having to concentrate for long. Re-read something you love to get back in the swing.
