Does anyone else remember the tube angels?

They looked like students in pen written t-shirts that helped people on the tube and accompanied people home. Their tshirts said tube angels.

They may have been an off shoot of the oxford street hare krishna's.

I remember some barefoot bloke and a woman talking to us and accompanying us to our tube stop, we would have been 14/15/16 and this would have been the mid-late 90s.

I don't remember them myself but when I was around 14 my grandmother (who travelled regularly through central London) said I looked like one.... backwards Kangol hat, red front streaks in my hair and a puffa/biker jacket

I heard about them but never saw one
I was surprised because I felt London was much safer than NY in those days.

They came and went after a couple of years, with the American style coming off as vigilantism in the UK, but apparently still exist as a community / volunteer group in the UK

I actually visited the NYC guardian angels HQ way back in around 1995. I have photos somewhere obviously printed but they are in a huge plastic storage box under the bed amongst many others. I also saw Hilary Clinton speak at a rally on that holiday and attended a meeting of striking journalists. I really need to get all those pics out.

I'm too young for that but we had street Angels in Lancaster in around 2013. They would help people home and feed us pizza to sober us up!

They were part of the church I think.

Yes - Street angels are very unlike the tube Guardian Angels

Church based, but not preachy and I don’t think you need to be a church type to join in
Just community spirit

They are there to help out those who are a bit worse for wear, ease off the load from the police & ambulances - by helping out the minor drunks stumbling, and before those minor drunk stumbles become major drunk

We have street pastors here who are volunteers from local churches supporting drunks and looking out for rough sleepers. Among their emergency kit they carry flip flops!

I seem to recall the Tube Angels/Guardian Angels got a lot of bad press though and sometimes caused more trouble than they prevented?
