Food banks - tinned fruit

Our local food bank is very short of tinned fruit. However, there is so much choice on the supermarket shelves. Can anyone say whether one sort of tinned fruit (I dont mean brand, but actual fruit eg pears or apricots for example) is preferred to any other or can I just pick any?

the ones in light syrup are usually better, I always get essential waitrose brand.

Cling pears in syrup, showing age

I used to make a lot of budget meals with tinned fruit and mostly used fruits that could be used in savoury or sweet meals mostly apricots (in juice), pineapple and dates.

bottled fruit tends not to be in syrup so more healthy but more expensive.

Does anyone know if dried fruit still has vitamins etc?

Tinned pineapple - mother used juice like squash, we were low income but it was delicious, ditto peach and pear juice

Wow! Thank you for your prompt responses. I’ll take note

I love tinned peaches, mandarins and use pineapple for various things.

I prefer in juice over syrup.

TellMeWhere · 04/10/2022 19:46

I also used to love fruit cocktail as a kid.

Mandarins and pineapple go down well here with tip top Grin

Peaches, apricots, fruit cocktail, mandarin and pineapple are the most popular at our food bank.

GiltEdges · 04/10/2022 19:49

I’d always buy in juice rather than in syrup. Peaches, pears and pineapple always popular.

Fruit salad has a bit of everything

I personally always enjoyed peaches or pineapple in syrup. I found pears a bit too hard.

I volunteer in a food bank. Here fruit cocktail and orange slices tend to be chosen last - peaches are always the first to go. Hope that helps.

i used to buy fruit cocktail when my dc were little
i nearly bought tinned mandarins for the food bank myself, but like op, i was concerned what people would like, i ended up donating a packet of biscuits!

UrsulaPandress · 04/10/2022 19:52

We have mainly peaches.

I like giving fruit cocktail to a family. Especially if we have a tin of carnation to go with it. But that’s rare.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/10/2022 19:52

my dc used to squabble over the cherry in the fruit cocktail <<sigh>>

ArseholesOnToast · 04/10/2022 19:54

Love fruit cocktail. My sister and I used to fight over the cherry when we were young.

sliced peaches are good too

Celeryfavour · 04/10/2022 19:54

My DC view tinned peaches as a huge treat!

HappyHamsters · 04/10/2022 19:56

Pear halves, peach slices, pineapple slices, with tinned custard.

WinOutdoors · 04/10/2022 19:57

We have a new cook at school. She'd made crumble using tinned fruit cocktail last week. TBH inwas a bit disappointed when I heard that, but omg it was delicious.

I'd go for what's most reasonably proced in juice not syrup.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/10/2022 19:57

but the syrup is lovely Wink

CaptainBarbosa · 04/10/2022 19:58

Tinned strawberries are a favourite for my homeless service users if that's any help.

Not fruit cocktail they don't like that 🤣

Peaches in syrup are also liked.

The sweeter the better basically!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/10/2022 20:00

yes, i didnt buy tinned fruit in syrup for my children,
but these are for other people who may want the treat of the syrup

totally agree - peaches in syrup from any brand. Can be as little as 30p. The whole
Family got in to them during lockdown! Fruit juice is healthier but it can be variable in terms of sourness. Second choice would be pineapple.
