I've always had my eyes tested at our local independent opticians, and this has always severed me well. I'm short sighted, -5 and -6, and started wearing varifocals a few years ago in my late 40s. I have my lenses thinned. Until varifocals came along, my optician bill was manageable! My last pair of varifocals plus simple, single vision sunglasses cost £700! Neither frame was anything special/big name/designer tie in.

3 years on, my glasses need replacing. I've noticed Asda advertise that they do complete varifocals for £150 or so.

Are these just as good as what I'd get from my local independent? Are they cheaper because the bulk buying power, or will they fall apart in 6 months? Or is this potentially a massive cost saving that I'd be daft not to take?

I don't know about the verificoals specificly but both DH and I have asda glasses (his from the very cheapest range) and they always last fine.

I've been getting glasses from asda for 20 years. Great choice, good quality and the care / treatment is very good. I've been back for refitting etc when I had an issue and they've always sorted it immediately.

Just be aware the varifocal lens they will be offering for that price will be a basic lens. Varifocals ultimately do the same job but the better quality the lens the less peripheral distortion. By the sound of it you are used to a decent lens with perhaps a larger reading area and better vision and clarity. Asda will no doubt have different types of varifocal so perhaps not going for the budget option will suit you better.
