I haven't had an alcoholic drink for 40 days

Not a long time, I know, but I have known for a while that I've been drinking too much. I can't 'cut down', I need to stop completely so that I don't gradually slip back into 3/4 bottles of wine a week.

No purpose to this thread other than I'm feeling a bit proud of myself I suppose. I nearly gave in last night and I know I have a long way to go, but it's a start isn't it.

You should be proud of yourself OP! 👏🏻. Very well done.

If you haven't already, check out the threads on MN's Alcohol Support. Lots of soberistas supporting each other there too.

I listed everything I hate about myself when drunk and it wasn't looking pretty about 30 things. I bought the book the unexpected joy of being sober and it has changed my life and I also buy non alcoholic drinks my fridge is full. At the start I was drinking lots of zero drinks but now I don't rely on them as much. I feel like a different person my bleeding gums have gone and I look a lot fresher and I feel mentally with it

117 days here. Tomorrow is my 24th wedding anniversary and it will be the first one sober.
At my worst (and that worst lasted many years), I was drinking 1.5 litres of vodka a day. How I'm still alive, I don't know.
Last Xmas we went away to a beautiful cottage, it cost nearly a grand - I drank 2 litres of vodka on Christmas eve and don't remember a thing till around 7pm on Christmas day. It was very hard at first- changing your mind set was the hardest thing - now I just take it one day at a time, and I'm beginning to forget about alcohol occasionally. I'm actually looking forward to Christmas- decorating the house and cooking lovely food, I'm a very good cook- and I'll be able to cook a lovely Xmas dinner.
Congratulate yourself, OP - you're doing wonderfully!!

Sammysquiz · 02/10/2022 17:59

Well done! You’ve done the hardest bit.

Stupidpeoplesuck · 02/10/2022 18:01

Well done!

mrsharrisgoestoparis · 02/10/2022 20:19

It's such a waste of time there is nothing like waking in the morning just dreading the day ahead I hate the hang overs I have wasted every Saturday and Sunday of my life for the last 40 years

Moon5 · 02/10/2022 20:20

Well done! Keep going xxx

Haggisfish3 · 02/10/2022 20:26

Bloody hell everyone-well done! I am envious of your successes.

Liuckle · 02/10/2022 21:00

Hi I posted recently about this. I just had a huge epiphany one day after binge drinking every weekend since I was a teen. I'm two weeks in with no alcohol and I feel so much better already

Amdone123 · 02/10/2022 21:06

@Liuckle , well done. Epiphanies are amazing, aren't they. That light bulb moment !
2 weeks is great - so many benefits you'll be feeling, and more to come.
Keep going ! 👏

Nowisthesummerofourdiscontent · 02/10/2022 21:24

I’d cut down to weekends only but found I drank to excess and at my age (50s), couldn’t handle the hangovers. Spoilt the weekends with the DCs. Decided to lose some weight and improve my skin/ health - plus my bank balance is better for it. Doesn’t feel like I’m missing out anymore so less of an achievement for me, but well done, everyone!

Always4Brenner · 02/10/2022 21:28

Well done be very proud of yourself you’ve done very well.

Liuckle · 02/10/2022 21:49

Yes I was weekends only and justified it that way. But I was getting through 3 bottles of wine and spirits over just two nights. Saturday and Sunday hangovers were getting worse due to my age and hormones and I realised that this was extending to Monday/Tuesday too because my body just couldn't process it. So most the week feeling below par.

It's been a joy to wake up at the weekend we'll slept and a clear head.

TitaniasAss · 02/10/2022 21:50

I can't handle the hangovers either. I also realised that I was actually thinking about having a drink before I got home from work and that scared me a lot. I still think about it and I am not finding this easy, particular as all my friends can drink on a night out and then not til the next night out. I can't do that. I know if I start again I'll be back at square one.

@TitaniasAss , you probably will still think about it. I'm working hard to cut back and I often think about it. But, I don't always act on it and that's the key. 2 things help me when the thought invades....1) I visualise batting it away then get on with my day and 2 ) I make myself laugh by thinking that sometimes I might for example, think about cleaning the bathroom....but I don't act on it !!
Hope that makes sense !!

TitaniasAss · 02/10/2022 22:36

I think I would be so upset with myself if I let myself down again.
