Passport renewal for DS (15yr 10months)

My son’s passport expires in Feb 23 . I was planning on renewing it now so that it all done and sorted

He is 15 , turning 16 in December. If I renew it now , I assume he will get another child one . Is there a way of getting an adult one before his 16th birthday

We don’t have any definite travel plans until June next year . I just want to make sure he has a valid passport as soon as possible
should I just wait and do it after his birthday?

I applied for child when he was 15 years and 9 months paid child amount. It took so long to come they rang and told me as he was now 16 he would need adult passport. I had to pay another £26.50 but it is for 10 years not 5.

Why wouldn't you wait? I don't see the dilemma
