What are these white lines on my toenails

Worrying myself silly over these thick white lines that appeared a few days ago across the base of my all my toenails on both feet. They are slightly raised and are almost half way up the whole of the nail. Will be a few weeks before I can see the podiatrist but does anyone have a clue what they could be?

What are these white lines on my toenails

I'm no health expert but looks like something called Terry's nails. It can be a sign of kidney and liver problems, diabetes, etc... so might be worth a visit to the doctor. Like I say I'm no expert and could well be wrong but worth checking out.

What white lines??

Can you circle where you think they are?

That's what my toenails look like

I assume the OP is talking about the white patches on the nails that go from the base to half way up the nail. Can't see it on the big toe as clearly but I can see it on the others.

Thank you everyone.

I don't know how to edit the photo but Crinkle has it spot on; there are no half moon white bits as per normal, just a thick white line from the base of the nail up to over half way to the top.

I am diabetic plus a liver function test came back low on a clotting factor recently so I definitely need to see the GP to pinpoint what the problem is I think.

My fingernails are fine.

Looks like the top half are yellow which is indicative of fungal nail infection. The yellowing may be why the bottom half seem white as that's newer nail.

What colour were they before? Are you alcohol dependent?

Crinkle77 · 02/10/2022 10:58

Good luck, hope all is well OP.

If you were a horse, we’d say it was a change in nutrition which causes lines along hooves. Have you changed your diet recently?

SisterMonicaJoan · 02/10/2022 19:52

I deffo have a fungal nail infection which is taking ages to treat but I gather that's pretty normal.

No, not alcohol dependent; I'm practically teetotal.

Nail beds were definitely pinkish with small pale half moons. This change happened in the last few days.

The thick line is also slightly raised.

No changes in diet.

Reading up on Terrys nails; I am diabetic, a liver function test last year showed a slightly lowered clotting issue but GP didn't want a follow up, I also suffer from Raynaud's and I'm on long term morphine so could be any one of those causing this.

Will try and get through to my GP

Thank you everyone

Hi OP. How are your nails now?

SisterMonicaJoan · 25/10/2025 21:55

Hey @insomniac1 Whatever it was eventually cleared up. I did ask the podiatrist about it but she none the wiser and wasn't concerned 🙄
