Is there a sofa bed that is a sofa first and bed second IYKWIM?

I need a new sofa, and could do with a guest bed solution, so have been looking around for something to fit the bill. I have noticed however that a couple of sofabeds I liked have actually specified occasional use only, whereas I want a sofa for daily use, that can on occasion be used as a bed. Is there anything like this out there? That won't cripple me financially?!

Doesn't it mean occasional use only as a bed?

Ikea?

Are you sure you haven't misunderstood?

sofabeds are usually sold as sofas with the recommendation that the bed part is for occasional use.

Worth checking British Heart Foundation- I got a fab sofa-bed in new condition from there very cheaply! Surely most would be sofas first and beds second, except maybe those day bed ones?

I thought that meant occasional use as a bed too, not as a sofa

I make sofas for a living OP. The sofa bed is the occasional use warning, not the actual sofa itself. It's because you can only fit a thin mattress inside the mechanism and it's nothing like a normal bed mattress so probably wouldn't do your back much good in the long term to use daily.

Normally a sofa is sprung under the seat cushions - with a bed mechanism, you're placing cushions onto a rigid surface instead. So look for one with thicker cushion borders than usual (at least 6" if not 8") and it should be comfy enough to sit on every day as well as use as a bed occasionally. Also, look for "one handed" release mechanisms that pulls out in one go rather than having to pull out and unfold.

That means you shouldn’t use the bed daily, you can sit on the sofa 24/7 though.

I think the problem tends to be that it’s really hard to find one that is comfy as a sofa and a bed. But I think there are lots that are comfy as a sofa and not much as a bed (the ones with the mechanism under) since the sofa cushions are separate to the bed part.

I was looking for one that was a decent bed and ok sofa. We had an ikea one that was ok as a bed (lycksele) but really hard as a sofa.

Recently got an L shaped Cocoon one that folds out into a king sized double bed. It’s quite firm but will soften up I think and is decent as a sofa and a bed. Take a look at their website.

Sitting on the sofa 24/7 is definitely my issue today.

I was worried it meant both..I can't recall where I saw this now, but it basically said suitable for guest room/occasional use only.

@Badger1970 Can I pick your brains please?😁What sort of price bracket should get me a decent sofa?

Honestly, I'd say at least £1500. Look for a sofa frame that's made from solid wood and comes with a 10 year warranty. The bed mechanisms don't tend to get as long as warranty, mind you.

It may be worth looking at a local upholsterer to make one for you so you're not paying a retail mark up. That way, you can choose your fabric and that makes a big difference to budget too.... we sell fabrics from £30 to over £300 a metre, so if you imagine that a 2 seater sofa uses at least 12 metres that's a huge variation.

Here’s our cocoon one that’s in a study

We have a swyft sofa bed. Use it every day as a couch and occasionally as a bed for guests. I absolutely love it but it's pricey.
