Headlines after Diana’s death

The ‘will you remember where you were when the queen died?’ Thread got me thinking.
When Diana’s death was announced I was a hungover 16 year old. I was awake fairly early and went to the newsagents to buy cigarettes. I remember seeing a headline (in my mind the Sun?) saying “Di dead Dodi Dying”.
Ive not been able to find any evidence of this headline ever existing. And I think Dodi died first so it seems an unlikely headline in any case.
But I definitely remember it! Just wondering if this rings any bells with anyone else? Or if it’s totally some false memory I’ve somehow implanted in my mind?

It's probably correct, they re-printed everything once they knew she was dead. There was a lot of confusion though on the night with various reports coming through.

im sure the first editions of the NOTW had a front page article slagging her off

it still makes me shiver, reading those headlines. Such a massive shock.

Yes I’m thinking that I’d it existed it was maybe a headline that got the mood wrong and was reprinted fairly quickly.

Thanks. Maybe it was an early print of that? Or I just added my own alliteration?

@chipsandpeas , there was def. a very nasty piece by a female journalist - IIRC in the Mail on Sunday - slagging her off. I’ve often wondered how that journo felt when she woke up that day and heard the news!

I remember it very well - I’d set the alarm for something like 4.30 am, since had to go and collect a dd who’d been away with family friends, from Gatwick, woke up to hear on the World Service that Diana had died. Drove in a daze to Gatwick, news still full of it.
At Gatwick, people off very early flights were walking around equally dazed, asking whether it was true. Newspapers for sale were all early editions which had missed it - inc. of course the one with the bitchy-journo piece.

I was out at work early as a carer that morning. I passed several newsagents and wondered why the paperboys/girls were all hanging around outside the shops (I later learned it was because they had pulled the front page and frantically printing new ones)
I went into a papershop a bit later and the News of the World headline screamed "Dodi dead, Diana seriously hurt"
I picked up a copy and the lady behind the counter informed me that Diana had died. I was gobsmacked.
That also explained why Virgin radio (the only station I could pick up in my car) had been playing really sombre music instead of the usual pop/rock stuff!!

Hugasauras · 01/10/2022 17:58

News of the World had: DODI DEAD, DI BADLY INJURED for their 2am edition.

LividLaVidaLoca · 01/10/2022 18:01

I was 17. I swear the early editions said she had a broken leg only.

Its crazy to think grown adults were going round 'dazed' at the death of a celeb! I was just a kid and not in the UK so don't really have any memories of it all really.

Georgeskitchen · 01/10/2022 18:07

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER It was a big shock and nobody saw it coming. I wasn't a big Diana fan but I did feel a bit dazed at the news, probably because thoughts immediately wandered to those poor boys who had just lost their mother in tragic and preventable circumstances

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/10/2022 18:14

She wasn’t just a ‘celeb’ @Choopi - that term covers all sorts of 3rd raters nobody would give much of a stuff about nowadays. Diana was pretty much a global star - it was massive news. And people coming off night flights at around 6 am would often have been a bit dazed anyway.

My dh was working in Jakarta (Indonesia) at the time, and even there, everything more or less stopped when the funeral was on, because so many people were watching it.

Starryskiesinthesky · 01/10/2022 18:16

My memory was going to the shop for the Sunday paper and the heading was Dodi dead, Diana critically injured or something like that. By the time we got home the news was on with the news that she had died.

MaverickSnoopy · 01/10/2022 18:16

I was 13 and remember hearing it on the radio when I woke up in the morning. I sat and cried for the boys because I felt such a surge that it could be me, or one of my friends that had lost a parent and couldn't imagine what they were going through.

I didn't see any of the headlines at the time. Reading them now, they're vile. Seems such a crude way to announce the death of anyone.

Yes that might have been what I saw.
