We have a teen and primary age child

they do help a little bit with chores like after tea we all tidy up together only take 5-10 mins

they are quite messy in their bedrooms
but not horrendous

so I’m thinking how do others operate this ?

We always say if you need money you can do jobs like clean the bathroom for a fiver etc

It's a while ago now but I started giving DS pocket money around age 8 in cash but in return there was the expectation of a few jobs done regularly, including room tidy and clothes in the wash basket.
Age 11 and secondary he started getting an allowance paid into a bank account.
Age 16 his allowance included lunch money for the week so he could choose how to spend this rather than have school meals. By this time we were up to about £100 per month.
DS is now at University and very canny with money, and has built up substantial savings from various paid jobs he has had since 6th form . But more importantly, he understands money, budgeting, investing, important life skills.

Both get pocket money not linked to jobs . Eldest (11) gets 4.50 a week and. 7 year old gets 2.50 a week.
eldest is very tidy anyway and cleans their joint room a lot but this doesn’t affect the pocket money .
sometimes they do extra jobs for a bit more .

I didn’t link it to jobs in the house and mine got £5 a week and eventually it went up to £40 per month. Then they both got part time jobs so we froze it.
They are grown up now and really good with money, not obsessed with it but they value it.
