How long was your latent labour with second baby?

First baby was an induction, so I don't know what to expect. Currently 38 weeks with second baby and been having irregular contractions over the past week. Overnight picked up to every 30-60 minutes, now calmed down again. Having a bit of nausea and feel a bit off, but also knackered from not sleeping well. Trying to make it through my last day of work (from home) and just want to nap on the sofa!

Husband is at work and toddler is at nursery. I've got a caesarean booked for ten days, not sure if we will make it that long?!?

I think it can be hard to know what is normal after an induction. With my first it was very long and painful- I needed all the drugs. With my second I didn’t realise I was in labour. In hindsight I had been in latent labour all day- I was at lunch with a friend and had some twinges but didn’t think anything of it. I remember reading my toddler a bedtime story while I must have been contracting but because it was manageable I just didn’t realise. I then had a bit of a rude awakening when I hit transition, waters broke and had a massive panic that our childcare wasn’t here yet and debating whether we’d need to leave my toddler with a neighbour to get to hospital. Basically don’t do that!

I was in hospital for reduced movement when I went into labour with my second. Because I was being monitored quite heavily they knew I was in labour a good couple of hours before I did. I knew I was in labour at about 10pm but the Dr said he could see contractions on the trace thingy for a couple of hours before that. I was due to start induction at midnight but they sacked that off obviously and my baby was born at 12:20am.

I'd say the full thing was around 4.5 hours? But the first two I wouldn't have known I was in labour at all. It was all very manageable by the way, compared to my induction with my third baby who was back to back and it was AGONY.

Good luck!

Not long! I made it to the hospital at 10cm’s.

Only 1st baby, but no contractions leading up. First contraction to birth about 6 hours

Crunchymum · 30/09/2022 16:57

Waters went, contractions began within 30 minutes. Baby within 4 hours of waters going. Home 6 hours after baby arrived.

Made a nice change after a 51h labour with DC1.

Thank you all! Anyone have a long early labour? Have since passed a bit more mucus plug but contractions still irregular. My mum is meant to come help with childcare for the caesarean but can’t be here before next weekend. Luckily we have kind neighbours who’ve said they can help in a pinch but I’d much prefer to have everything go smoothly and as we planned 😬

My first took 10 hours
My second 2 hours

Both born in a birthhouse and back home same day.

With Dc2 contractions started and stopped over 3-4 hours. They would be very strong and almost continuous then stop before starting again My waters wouldn’t break and as I had consented to a student midwife being with me the midwife suggested breaking them would get things moving. Student midwife managed it and contractions began immediately, along with the urge to push. Two pushes and Dc2 arrived just a few minutes later. I should add Dc1 was early and precipitous labour. He arrived start to finish in an hour. My inductions were tedious but the labours very fast.

Sorry to say this but mine was 55 hours and counting before I had a second CS. Apparently it never qualified as active labour, despite having agonising contractions powerful surges every 5 mins for most of that time.

EmiliaAirheart · 01/10/2022 00:58

Also meant to say, I hope all goes well. Rest while you can and enjoy meeting your little one soon!

7 hours 1 3 and 4 were 24+ dd2 however was a smooth labour

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 01/10/2022 10:17

Thank you! Contractions have slowed down but had a couple overnight that woke me from sleep, now nothing but a bit of loose stool since waking up at 5:30 😳

Hav been feeling more pelvic pressure, I assume from baby’s head more low, but I understand they can bounce up and down a bit more with second babies.

House is a tip so trying to do as much of a whip round as possible in case my neighbours need to come help with our 3 yo 🫣
