Duolingo- paid for version?

Hi, after some language learning (German) advice.

I was playing around with the free Duolingo, as advised by MN but I found it all over the shop. I was never quite sure if I had to complete all the lessons in one section or could skip around; and I'd get the opportunity to test myself and the test was either ridiculously easy or full of words that hadn't come up, yet.

Is the paid for version much better? Or are there better structured aids out there?

I have had several free trials of the paid version as I have been using DL for years and they still insist on trying to sell me the paid version.

I really don't think it is worth the money to be honest unless you really can't put up with the adverts. I have found using it on a desktop rather than a phone you don't loose hearts like the mobile version so to me I don't see the point of paying.
