What is the added value to the wider UK am economy from shorting the pound?

The only benefit is for the hedge fund managers who have shorted it.

For any UK exporters, yes, it will help them shift what they're selling. However, the UK imports virtually everything, so the cost of those goods will now rise massively. Including oil.

That oil that's running out.
