Experiences taking propylthiouracil for hyperthyroidism

I've just been diagnosed as having hyperthyroidism. My endocrinologist today has prescribed propylthiouracil as I'm still breastfeeding.

I don't seem to have any symptoms other than extreme hunger, at the moment, literally nothing fills me up, I've even been waking up during the night with hunger pains and I can't get to sleep until I've eaten a couple of bowls of cereal! I've been putting weight on, but also feel down about the amount I'm eating. I feel pretty disgusted in myself.

Has anyone started taking meds for hyperthyroidism and noticed a reduction in symptoms?

I'm also hoping that I don't put weight on. My mum put weight on when she had hyperthyroidism and started the meds, although she lost a lot of weight before treatment started so it wasn't too bad for her as she just put the lost weight back on. I've put over half a stone on, and really don't want to put on too much more.

Thank you!

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism also, I was prescribed with propranolol for my palpitations and thiamazole for the thyroid to go back to normal. And I am a heavy smoker, should I stop smoking immediately?

I was on propilthyoricil after carbimazolr kept giving me a very sore throat.

It worked, but be aware of the utter dog breath it gives you!!

If carbimazole is giving you a sore throat you need to tell your doctor immediately.

From the British National Formulary:

Patient and carer advice For carbimazole
Warn patient or carers to tell doctor immediately if sore throat, mouth ulcers, bruising, fever, malaise, or non-specific illness develops.

From the patient information leaflet:

Stop taking Carbimazole and see a doctor straight away, if you notice any of the following side effects:

  • Any infection such as a sore throat or mouth ulcers.

I looked it up in the BNF (I'm a medical professional) and had to tell my GP why it was an issue?!
