I’ve got a cold which is morphing into the classic tickly cough. Due in work tomorrow in an office and need it to STFU. Do any of the medicines ever work or are there any natural remedies which will quieten it even if just for a bit?

OP can I follow because I need to know 😩

i drank an entire bottle of Covina tickle cough stuff yesterday and it did fuck. All. I’ve not really slept in days, every time I try I get the classic tickly spasm and want to claw my own throat out by the time the cough is done.

A tickley cough just needs something sticky/melty. Any boiled sweet or humbug type will do. Honey in hot water if you don't want to be eating sweets all day. Could add glycerine (in baking aisle).

hot water with lots of lemon & honey constantly

For a dry tickle, try honey. It's not going to solve it for long though, so maybe a booked sweet/lozenge.

Codeine is a cough suppressant but I wouldn't advocate that lol

Years ago Gee's Linctus was marvellous, but I think people became addicted to it, so it was withdrawn.

Maybe it’s not dry then because that brings me about 5 seconds relief, it’s no good having a boiled sweet in your mouth when you’re trying to sleep either…

would the codeine in cocodamol work I wonder, or is it too tiny a dose.

Steam?

LadyLolaRuben · 26/09/2022 16:27

Boiled sweets. Have a sip of a drink when u feel the urge to cough. Syrup and treacle do the same as cough mixture so I wouldn't waste your money.

A small piece of dark chocolate helps with a cough

If you can, breathe through your nose. If you can’t, then drink warm water as much as possible. If your mouth/throat dries out it makes it so much worse.

Watching for tips
Finally negative from covid . Been left with a dry cough that turns productive.
Drink plenty of fluids , paracetamol.

Nothing really works, coughing happens for a good reason, to keep your lungs clear.

couchcritter · 26/09/2022 16:44

Night nurse used to be my saviour. Don't know if I can have it these days with the medication I'm on right now so am crossing my fingers not to catch a cold 🤞🤞🤞

Turmeric supposedly suppresses a cough (I have yet to try it!) You could make a drink with it - turmeric powder, hot water, honey, lemon?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 26/09/2022 16:48

Linden tea (Lipa in the Polish shop)

skilpadde · 26/09/2022 16:52

Pholcodine linctus is a cough suppressant. It's much cheaper than buying the branded versions of dry/tickly cough medicine.

In between, I'd drink warm water with honey, and I'd add lemon if I had a build up of mucus at the back of my throat.

If it's a productive cough, yes, and it's best to take an expectorant to ease the coughing rather than suppress it.

If it's an unproductive cough, and you're only coughing because your throat tickles, it's okay to take a cough suppressant.

notlyndasnell · 26/09/2022 16:54

Covonia original bronchial balsam.
You can get it in pharmacies.
Thyme tea with honey is a herbal alternative.
I hope you feel better soon!

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 26/09/2022 16:57

A doctor told me once, sip water and boiled sweets. But not too many as you don't want to coat your throat.

Also try not to cough too much, it irritates and makes you want to cough!

I've got a really sore throat and cough and I am constantly drinking water or warm water. No tea or coffee as it sticks to your throat!

hellcatspangle · 26/09/2022 17:12

Pholcodeine linctus

PornographicPriestess · 26/09/2022 17:14

Pineapple juice. No one ever believes me but it works
