What can I do with an echo dot?!

I've been given 2 echo dots for my birthday. Can someone explain to me in very childlike language what I can do with 2 echo dots?! I'm a self confessed technophobe and have no idea what to do with them.

Radios
Alarm clock
Timer
Weather
Intercom if there are other people are around
Shopping lists
Reminders

You can use them as walkie talkies between rooms.

you can play your music or audible through a dot. You can use it as a talking Google, ask it for time, set alarms, etc.

Nothing they’re shit. And the voice recognition seems to be getting worse. I just find myself arguing with ours. Husband thinks they’re shit too but won’t throw them away because he spent money on them.

Blocked · 26/09/2022 11:08

I use mine to ring my sister.

Blocked · 26/09/2022 11:08

Oh and for white noise at night.

I don't know why (sorry) but this made me laugh.

Possibly because it sounds so much like something I'd say.

I live in a 3 story house - these may save the vocal chords actually.

How do I use them as intercom?!

They're £20 at the moment. Worth it?

I really like mine.

I work from home in a busy role, interrupted by various scheduled meetings. It’s all too easy to lose track of time, so I have a dog by my desk and every morning I set reminders for all my video calls!

Goldmember · 26/09/2022 11:32

Intercom throughout the house, dinner announcement etc.
We play Spotify or the radio though ours. I also use it to turn our smart bulbs and smart plugs on and off.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/09/2022 11:34

Daily Harry Potter quiz!!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/09/2022 11:35

Reminders about PE kit, music books etc

BurscoughBooths · 26/09/2022 11:37

I unplugged mine, waste of electricity.

TigerRag · 26/09/2022 11:38

I use mine for reminders, the news, music and when I order from Amazon, it tells me when my item will be here.

Choopi · 26/09/2022 11:40

Play fan noises all night so your dog doesn't bark at every single bump in the night. That's what I use ours for anyway.

Rockandgrohl · 26/09/2022 11:41

Mine is in the kitchen, I mostly use it as a digital radio, as a speaker to play amazon music and to set timers for cooking and reminders. The intercom feature sounds pretty cool, but my house is too small to justify a second, you'd hear whatever someone was asking her to announce without using it 🤣

Occasionly use the shopping list function. My 4 year old uses it for all sorts of shit though...currently games of musical statues are a favourite

spiderlight · 26/09/2022 11:55

To use them as an intercom, you just say 'Alexa, announce - get your arse out of bed or you'll be late for school!' and she'll replay what you've said on every dot in the network. This is the main thing we use ours for, as we have a teenager with a loft bedroom! You can also use them to stream music or podcasts, ask them questions (to which you admittedly sometimes get very random answers), set timers/alarms, and they'll tell you jokes if you ask. 'Alexa, open teenage mode' is quite funny.

Cornettoninja · 26/09/2022 11:56

I mostly use mine for the radio and alarms but we got dd one so she could play music and listen to audio books in her room.

AlsoknownasOther · 26/09/2022 11:59

Oven timer
Musical warfare: ability to override each other's choices. Eg. Mum wants Tainted Love by Soft Cell at volume 3. I changed it to the Marilyn Manson version level 8.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/09/2022 12:04

I use mine as an alarm clock with different t

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/09/2022 12:09

Posted too soon - i use mine as an alarm clock to wake me up at different times on different days - which means I can have my phone away from my bed.

Aposterhasnoname · 26/09/2022 12:10

Controlling smart bulbs, the robo vac and plugs, set up
endless routines, listen to music or the radio, set alarms and reminders, do shopping lists, wind DH up by getting them to rickroll him at random times of the day. Listen to audio books, win arguments with DH by getting Alexa to tell us who played James Bond in live and let die, and playing baby shark endlessly on a loop when grandson is round.

Oh, and Santa, mustn’t forget setting it to automatically hear from Santa every morning when the alarm goes off in December.

PinotPony · 26/09/2022 12:22

I've got some smart plugs so use Alexa to turn on the kettle from my bed.

Also have smart bulbs in my room so can change colour, make brighter, etc.

Plus the usual alarms, shopping list, music and audible books.

thesonicoscillator · 26/09/2022 12:52

Love mine, use it for communicating with people in other part of the house, radio, calling other Alexa users ( family in different country for example) to speak to them while I'm cooking. Kitchen timer used daily, shopping lists, controls on all my wifi plugs & lights in the house, robot vacuum too. I no longer Google search as much, just ask Alexa on the dot instead. Music player, plays my spotify list plus all radio. Reminds me to take the bins out too. I think the most useful thing was trying to contact a relative who hasn't switched her mobile on, we were worried sick, but came through on her echo dot telling her to switch her phone on.

catandcoffee · 26/09/2022 13:32

Can someone explain how to use it.
Do you just plug it in and connect to your wifi ?
Can you then ask it to play music ect

You have to download the Alexa app, you plug it in and connect it to WiFi through the app then you can say Alexa set an alarm or Alexa play BBC radio 2...I think you might need Amazon music to play any songs you like which is something like £5 a month.
