Please help me decide what flavour cake to make

Hey,

I am making a cake for a work leaving do. What flavour should I make? I was thinking either vanilla (too boring?) or chocolate malt flavoured (do other people like malty things?).

The frosting is chocolate either way.

Thanks! 🎂

Orange

Believe it or not, I came on to say this 😁. Love orange cake.

Why have you decided on the frosting flavour before deciding on the sponge flavour? Surely you would need to ensure they match? I would go for normal chocolate sponge (not malt, sounds weird) with chocolate icing, or vanilla with vanilla icing. Might seem boring but they're classic combinations for a reason.

IF you can make a decent 'heavy' moist chocolate cake, that!! If not ginger? Or vanilla, not orange -bleurgh!!

This is one of the best cakes to make in the world! So delicious and stays good for a while without going dry.

Nigella's Guinness cake. It's so easy to make and out of this world.

Honeyroar · 24/09/2022 19:48

Chocolate frosting works really well on a banana bread cake with choc chips in the cake too.

AnotherEmma · 24/09/2022 19:50

Not orange, not ginger, not mint chocolate, ugh ugh ugh.

CakeMake · 24/09/2022 19:57

Thanks for the input everyone. Although, I can see clearly there is no consensus haha. Why is picking a flavour so damn difficult?!

@AnotherEmma I have a big batch of chocolate ermine in the freezer from a bake last month. It’s a big cake that will need to be baked, carved, covered and decorated so I cba to make frosting as well.

Fair enough. Chocolate then! Or chocolate orange if you must.

Chocolate it is. I want to be uncontroversial. Thanks!

I like chocolate with raspberry jam in the middle to cut through the richness!

AdaColeman · 24/09/2022 20:37

Make a coffee flavoured cake, then with the chocolate frosting you'll have a mocha cake. Coffee and chocolate, what's not to like?

Grumpyarchitect · 24/09/2022 20:39

Lemon!

I made a coffee cake yesterday and it was a disaster. A bitter & burnt disaster 😢

I was going to suggest carrot cake, but not if your set on chocolate icing.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 24/09/2022 21:16

Lemon!

Chocolate/vanilla marble cake?

StacyNotGavin · 24/09/2022 22:17

Ooooo do a chocolate and vanilla chequered cake!

JennyWreny · 24/09/2022 22:21

Sachertorte. Not too tricky to make and tastes amazing. Chocolate/almonds/apricot jam - yum.

mamaduckbone · 24/09/2022 22:23

I've never met anyone who didn't like a lemon drizzle

mamaduckbone · 24/09/2022 22:24

....but definitely not with the chocolate frosting that you want to use, so go full-on chocolate.

Sounds cool but... effort! (This is why I don't bake cakes and just eat them Grin)

Is a marble cake reasonably easy to do? I think that would be a good option if not classic chocolate.
