Discord app - ok for DS15?

DS14 wants this app. He says it's to chat with pals who are on PS (he's on xbox) It's rated 17+ and we've been quite strict on things like this so far. Does anyone have any experience of this app? Is it pretty much like Snapchat??

yeah it's completely fine it's basically just a live chat with your friends while you game

It's a chat app. You can do one-to-one text or voice chat (like Skype) but there are also "servers" which are for groups of people usually based around interests. I'd keep an eye on the servers (group chats) that he's in, if he just wants to use it to chat to mates while gaming it's fine.

An adult man used this app to target my son (12 at the time) sexually. I had no idea he had the app, when I found out he deleted it so there is that to watch out for, but at 15 he is probably a bit more savvy than my son was at this age.

Discord is like anything else - you need to be careful and internet savvy. Beyond that it's a good place to discuss your interests - my 19yo DS is heavily involved in poetry and shark conservation groups on Discord. He has (with precautions) met up in RL with people and made good friends.

I want to be friends with your DS! 😁

There are lots of individual “servers” in it which are basically like mini forums - so like hundreds of thousands of little Mumsnets, only anyone can set one up, and the content is generally unpoliced and also pretty untraceable.

He might be gaming with his mates on their server; but he could also join lots of other servers with far weirder or sexualised content and little or no moderation or rules. It ranges from rather innocent teenage fan fiction, to all sorts of stuff, including some places and people you probably don’t want your kid chatting to (gender weirdness, grooming, hardcore porn, sex chat, etc.)

Ok great thank you. We'll have to keep an eye on the servers he's on but it does seem like he genuinely just wants to be able to live chat with pals while they're gaming on different platforms. Just don't want him going down any rabbit holes 🤞🏻
