Difficulty swallowing 2WW cancer pathway

Hi all, first time poster here!

I’m going quickly crazy and I need of some help to get me off the ledge!

a month ago, a ‘friend’ of mine was showing me some self defence moves and squeezed my throat a little too hard, it was painful on that side for the following week, then possibly turned into tonsillitis, I’m not sure, I got amoxicillin and the red throat/sore throat has continued and I’m now on the 2 week cancer pathway which is really scary!

I’m struggling to focus on anything else at the moment and am now finding that food seems to be getting stuck at some mealtimes too, obviously I’m concerned about the obvious but has anyone had throat trauma and taken a while for their throat to return to normal?

just wondering if this is all caused by that or not, and now the swallowing thing is really concerning too

thanks soooo much!

Could also “just” be an anxiety thing while you’re in 2WW- I conjured up all sorts whilst I was waiting, and all came good, hopefully the same for you xx

Mandbb80 · 24/09/2022 18:03

@Umbellifer Thank you, I am feeling total panic so anxiety is pretty rife, so glad to hear all was ok for you, I’m praying it’s the same here xx

Did you have a sore throat or trouble swallowing before, OP?

And sorry to ask, but what sort of self defence moves involves causing damage to your throat? Are you ok?

@CantFindTheBeat Thank you for asking! It was like an MMA move or something, he was showing me how to disable someone if they go for you? It was in full view of a pub garden full of people, he showed me where to place your hands around someone’s throat/windpipe to basically make them pass out, I told him not to make me do that! 😂 and then he just squeezed but mainly on the left side which is where all the pain and swollen glands/tonsils etc are..

I only had trouble swallowing food occasionally, I choked on some food in a restaurant a few years back so feel panicky with large pieces of meat 😂 I had Spag Bol tonight and it feels like there is a small piece of mince that just won’t go down xx

@CantFindTheBeat also no sore throat beforehand, he also kissed me that night (I’m 42 almost but sound like a teenager right now!) and I was thinking maybe the throat infection has come from that, who knows!!

I'm sure you will be Ok then, OP.
Sounds like you may have had some bruising.

The fella doesn't sound that ok though, to be honest.

I'd steer clear of anyone stupid or arrogant enough to put their hands around your throat uninvited.

I’d really try not to panic. I’ve been on the 2 week pathway and it is scary (mine was not cancer). It very much sounds like you’ve had an injury. I can’t remember what it’s called, but this is a thing after throat trauma. I have a friend who has it. Her injury was horse related I think. She’s developed swallowing issues and some breathing issues (like her throat closes up). I’m afraid to say it didn’t easily go away and she is doing physio for it now. But it wasn’t cancer. Hope you get some answers and feel better soon.

LiftyLift · 24/09/2022 18:49

That’s awful, he sounds like he was way too rough. I hope you have told him what you’re now going through as a result of him showing off.

I am on the TWW for a similar thing - I actually rang a private hospital and was seen the day following my referral. I’m now on a new TWW of treatment and will decide then if it’s cancer or something else.

hope you’re ok OP. The TWW in itself worries you,

Gilead · 24/09/2022 19:26

I’m on the same pathway asI have a nodule on my lung. Good luck!💐

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 24/09/2022 19:40

The swallowing issue is probably linked to you being anxious it's one of my signs of anxiety when I'm having a flare up. Try not to over think it.
Also a lot of referrals are being put through on the 2ww so they actually get an appointment this year so don't let that panic you either. Good luck

Hi all, sorry I haven’t replied to the later comments on my post, and thank you so very much for your words! It’s been a busy week and I was seen yesterday at the oral health dept, it turns out I was referred to the wrong dept and and now awaiting a referral to ENT to have the camera up and down my throat 🥺 I just want it done now so that I can see what’s happening, the consultant I saw had a look (she’s in the head and neck dept) and said from what she can see, it doesn’t look serious but as it’s been so long, and she’s unable to see further down my throat, I will need the camera to make sure… I can’t help but feel worried still that they will find something further down! Eurgh! X

Hi OP, how are you now?

Mandbb80 · 13/01/2024 20:54

Hi!! All was resolved, thank you, I ended up having a camera up my nose and down my throat and the verdict was that the side I was squeezed was slightly damaged from the action of it, it got better fairly quickly, possibly from the lack of anxiety I felt with it! I have occasions where I feel like food gets stuck still but it’s only rarely so I’m hopeful that that also may just be a case of anxiety xx
