Washing chicken

I have never done this in my life but just did because I defrosted it for tonight''s dinner and it was a bit whiffy.

I rinsed it under the tap and then put it in a bath of cold water with some white wine vinegar like some people advise.

I've wiped it with kitchen towels and it smells fine. If not, I'd have cooked something else. I think it was just the plastic bag, which I've bundled up and thrown away along with the paper towels.

But what I wanted to say was that though I was trying to be careful I splashed water all over the work surface next to the sink when I turned the tap on and have had to clean it and re-wash the clean crockery and cutlery that was draining..

I believe experienced chicken washers when they say they never splash but for the novice it is trickier than it looks.

Your mistake was to use running water. 😃

It's not something I do, but in my experience it's more of a bath than a shower.

I thought you were afraid of washing.

I don’t (unless brine marinading, in which case the chicken will have several salt baths) because let’s face of, what is cold or tepid tap water going to do to a chicken that being cooked at 180 degrees for at least an hour and a half won’t? But agree with previous posters that friends who do wash chicken don’t do it under running water which splashes.

Washing chicken is unnecessary and is a safety hazard.

It was a rookie error to wash it under a running tap. I don't know what came over me. Chicken juice, mostly. I've got it under control now but would like people to learn from my mistake. Put it in a bowl of cold water and agitate it slightly.

Yes I wash in a bowl of water and then pour out carefully. No splash. Then lots of lemon/lime juice and leave for a few mins before I think about seasoning...
