I have life360 app. It's free and works as long as the phone is on and not in battery saver mode

if I knew where he was i could just stop worrying.

he doesn’t go out much, he doesn’t have a set time to be in, it depends where he’s going. I don’t want to nag him about letting me know where he is

YES LIFE 360 is good but it doesn't work if the battery is very low or out completely

Does he have an iPhone?
We used to track our ASD teen on find my phone. Works well.

We use the Family Link app on Android. Gives live location, how much battery time etc

Apple AirTags can be attached to key rings and work with android phones as well as Apple.

We all have each other on FindMy on the iPhone. When my DD turned 16 I suggested that if she wanted to remove us she could, but she wanted to keep it. My kids also have AirTags on their key rings, buts that’s mostly so they can find their phones and attached airpods.

Life360 can also send you a warning if their battery is getting low on charge so you can nag them! If you have Android rather than iPhone then Chipolo make a kind of air tag equivalent which is ok.
