Will and inheritance planning

Me and DH are planning our wills and thinking through the different possibilities. We have a 50/50 mortgage on our house and I may have some inheritance in the future.

DH had 1 DS from a previous marriage and we have 2 DC together. DHs DS has his mum and a big family to inherit from as well as DH. Our DCs have myself and DH to inherit from.

As far I see it each of DHs kids should get 1/3 inheritance from DH and our two together get 1/2 inheritance from me. Our 2 DCs are very young but DHs DS is in his twenties and working.

As the kids are young and neither of us have close family my plan is to split everything 1/3. So if I die DH and our 2 DCs get 1/3 each. If we both die while they are kids it means the kids should have enough to live off until they are grown up.

Can anyone see any issues with this or any circumstances where it could go wrong? DHs ex has form for asking for money so I want to make sure my kids are legally protected.

We own our house 50/50. My half goes to my DD, DH half goes the her and his older 2 in equal shares.

That was something I considered actually. It does sound like a good option that protects everyone.

How do you own the house - tenants in common or joint tenants?

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I can't remember. We discussed it at the time and I think we chose tenants in common.

I can see that will make a difference in terms of who will inherit the other half of the property if one of us dies. I'll check this out, thanks for pointing out that this will make a difference
