I want to share this bit of natures joy

About a year ago, we saw a woodpecker in our garden. It gave us a lot of pleasure seeing him, or her and called it Woody. Earlier this year we saw another join them, slightly smaller. I don't know what makes them male or female. We assume it is their love.

Anyway, this morning, I looked out into my garden and there is the big one, the slightly smaller one and two smaller ones. We are assuming they are a lovely family, like the 4 in my house.

Help me name them. We just have Woody so far.

Forgot to mention they fly down onto the grass and pick at whatever is going on there.

Is there anything I can put out to help them along in the winter months?

They are so cute.

That's so lovely! Have you got any pics?
I'm crap at thinking of names so my contribution would be Rod, Jane and Freddy.

I will try and take some when they come back.

How about: Woody, Woodelma, Woodwin and, erm ... Woodwina?

🤪

Lovely wee anecdote OP.

How lovely! So lucky to have them in your garden.

I would imagine those suet/mealworm sprinkles which most supermarkets sell would be great for them, particularly at this time of year.

Aw, lucky you! That's gorgeous.

Yabu. For not providing photos. 😃

FinanceLPlates · 23/09/2022 16:11

One of them could be Gregory (Peck)

AmethystMoonShine · 23/09/2022 16:12

Are they great spotted or green woodpeckers? Assume green if feeding from the ground? They like ants!

lannistunut · 23/09/2022 16:17

That is such a gorgeous story, thanks for sharing!

I think they are green. They have a red strip on their heads. I will try and get a picture when they next come.

They are so sweet.

Get your binoculars out to spot the difference between male & female Op 🤓

Many congratulations! We've had a family of Greater Spotted Woodpeckers, but not a Green one.

That's absolutely lovely! I see (and hear on occasions) woodpeckers in one of the wooded parks.
My friend hangs fat balls in their garden and that attracts them.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 23/09/2022 18:51

Edwood Woodwood

ChannelIsland · 23/09/2022 20:04

If you have a Woody already I would go with a Toy Story theme.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 23/09/2022 20:25

We have a seagull family who we have become very close to.

We call them;

Harry
Mrs Harry
Baby Harry
The Other Baby Harry
