Contacting recruiter before applying for job

I'm currently looking to progress my career within my industry. I have applied for a few jobs and my latest interview went ok but the job was gave to someone who scored slightly higher at interview. I have been advised by colleagues it is definitely worth contacting recruiter before interview/application and this gives a good impression. I have never done this before which could be where I'm going wrong, as well as the fact I'm not the best at interviews and get very nervous. Can anyone advise on things to ask/say when contacting recruiter/how to give a good first impression? The role is internal so I already know about the trust.

What do you usually say/ask? The job description is quite detailed so it would look as though I haven't bothered to read it it I ask about the role.

It’s true, lots of people expect it and think very negatively towards those who don’t. As you say, it’s annoying when the JD is so thorough. I’d ask things like the elements of the JD that they’re most interested in, where the organisation is likely to be heading over the next year, but really it’s just a chance to flag how suitable you are and sound enthusiastic.
